Epic Terrain is a worldgen mod that rewrites vanilla terrain into something closer to real geography. Expect mountain ranges, alpine peaks, continental plates, eroded coastlines and a river system with large and small rivers, drops and sources. Builds cover Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt from 1.19.2 to 1.21.4, and it is required on the server and optional on the client.

Versions and dependencies

  • Loaders: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, each with builds from 1.19.2 to 1.21.4. None of them has stopped.
  • Side: required on the server, optional on the client.
  • 1.19.2 to 1.19.4 uses v0.2.5 (beta). 1.20 to 1.20.4 uses v0.3.0 (alpha, experimental). 1.20.5 to 1.21.4 uses v0.1.4 (beta). The newest upload is 0.3.0 alpha from 2026-06-23.
  • Some 1.20.5 to 1.21.4 builds require WorldgenFeatureFix, because the mod's lake feature is broken in 1.21 without it.
  • Optional on many builds: Arboria: Biome Enhancement. The 1.20 to 1.20.4 builds also list Abundant Vegetation as optional.

Installation

  1. 1.Download the build that matches your Minecraft version and loader from Modrinth. Loader builds carry a +mod suffix.
  2. 2.Install it on the server. Clients can add it too, but do not have to.
  3. 3.For the datapack zip, place it in the world's datapacks folder, then run /reload. You can also enable it in the Data Packs screen when creating a world.

Compatibility and trade-offs

This is an experimental project and compatibility is not a design goal. Biome distribution is reset, so mods that add biomes almost never fit, while mods that tweak vanilla behaviour generally do. A companion pack, Epic Terrain Compatible, from the same creator collects compatibility fixes.

The scale is the other cost. Following real-world proportions, oceans can stretch 10,000 blocks, so the creator recommends the World Preview mod to survey a seed before you commit to it.

Questions about Epic Terrain.

5 questions

Does Epic Terrain work with TerraBlender?

No. TerraBlender disables the surface functionality Epic Terrain depends on, and rivers are the example given. Because Epic Terrain resets biome distribution, it also clashes with most mods that add biomes. Mods that only modify vanilla behaviour are the safer pairing.

Which Minecraft versions does Epic Terrain support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt builds run from 1.19.2 to 1.21.4. Version 0.2.5 targets 1.19.2 to 1.19.4, 0.3.0 alpha targets 1.20 to 1.20.4, and 0.1.4 targets 1.20.5 to 1.21.4. Plain 1.19 is not planned because it lacks custom biomes.

Does Epic Terrain work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, and the server is where it matters. It is required on the server and optional on the client, so players can join without installing it. Builds exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, from 1.19.2 to 1.21.4. Pick the build that matches your server's Minecraft version and loader.

Why does Epic Terrain need WorldgenFeatureFix?

Some builds for 1.20.5 to 1.21.4 use the minecraft:lake feature, which is buggy in Minecraft 1.21. WorldgenFeatureFix is a separate mod that patches it, and those builds list it as required. Other builds for the same loaders list no required dependencies.

What is the Epic Terrain Compatible datapack?

It is a separate companion datapack from the same creator that collects compatibility fixes, since Epic Terrain itself does not aim for compatibility. This page covers the main Java mod only, so check the companion listing if a pairing with another worldgen mod misbehaves.
