Fast Noise is a fast noise mod for world generation: it cuts the time Minecraft Java spends building new chunks. It ships for Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge and Forge and belongs on the server side, since the client is not supported. It aims for vanilla parity, datapacks included.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric and Quilt: Minecraft 1.19 to 26.3. The newest build requires ZConfig; some builds for 1.19 to 26.2 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.21.10 to 1.21.11 require Fabric API.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.20.6. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What it changes
Fast Noise replaces populateNoise and populateBiomes in NoiseChunkGenerator, plus the surface builder. Vanilla's generic and debug-oriented storage code gives way to tighter, more packed calculations. The methods behind the speedup are fewer allocations, no palette resizing, delayed and packed block counting, precalculated data and cached block state information.
How much faster
The overall gain in the Overworld is about 10 to 18 percent on 1.21.11, and the Nether and End improve by much more. In a Chunky pregeneration of 16,641 chunks on 12 threads, the run dropped from 1:47 to 1:37. The listed benchmark speedups by stage are:
- Biome: 1.025x Overworld, 1.058x Nether, 2.105x End.
- Noise: 1.309x Overworld, 1.952x Nether, 1.183x End.
- Surface: 1.424x Overworld, 2.775x Nether, 2023.14x End.
Install and compatibility
Place the mod file in the server's mods folder for your loader, following the mod install guide if you are new to it. Keep vanilla non-determinism in mind. Custom worldgen mods are supported where possible, and optimizations that could affect them are disabled by default.
Questions about Fast Noise.
4 questions
Does Fast Noise change how the world generates?
The mod maintains vanilla parity, including with datapacks. Vanilla non-determinism still applies, so keep that in mind when comparing results with and without the mod.
Do I need Fast Noise on the client?
No. The mod is required on the server, and the client side is listed as unsupported. Place the mod file in the server's mods folder for the loader your server runs, and add any dependency that the build you pick requires. Fast Noise is listed for server use on Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge and Forge.
Does Fast Noise work with custom worldgen mods?
Generally yes. The mod only touches code it considers safe, and optimizations that might affect other worldgen mods are turned off by default. Compatibility is something the mod works toward rather than a promise, so test your own pack first.
How much faster does Fast Noise make world generation?
The stated gain is about 10 to 18 percent overall in the Overworld on 1.21.11, with larger gains in the Nether and End. A Chunky run of 16,641 chunks on 12 threads went from 1:47 to 1:37.
