Fast Item Frames is a Fabric and NeoForge mod for Java that turns item frames from entities into lightweight blocks. The result is less lag and better frame rates in builds with many frames. It also adds dyeing, invisible frames and waxing, and it must be installed on both sides, so every player and the host need it.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API, Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build requires Puzzles Lib.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 1.20.4, builds stopped after September 2025. The newest build requires Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port, optionally Forge Config Screens.
What changes in play
- Block-based frames render and update faster, which helps most where many frames sit together.
- Frames react instantly when their supporting block is broken or moved by pistons.
- Breaking particles and /setblock support work, and several frames can still share one block space.
- Dye frames like leather armor to reach 5,713,438 colors.
- Shift + right-click with an empty hand hides the frame and shows the item larger than usual.
- Honeycomb waxes a frame, which locks rotation, changes and visibility.
- An optional setting hides custom item names while you look at displayed items.
Installation and configuration
Place the mod file and each required library in the mods folder, then launch with the matching loader profile. Puzzles Lib is one of those libraries. The Java mod install guide covers the steps if you are new to this. Settings live in .toml files in the config folder, and Fabric players can edit them in-world through Mod Menu.
Existing worlds
An optional setting converts vanilla item frame entities into item frame blocks as chunks load. Leave it off if you want old frames untouched.
Questions about Fast Item Frames.
3 questions
Does Fast Item Frames need to be installed for multiplayer?
Yes. The mod is required on both sides, so the host and every player must have it installed. Mismatched setups will not work together, because frames become blocks instead of entities.
What does Fast Item Frames change about item frames?
It replaces entity-based frames with block-based ones for faster rendering and updates. It also adds dyeable frames, invisible frames that show the item larger, waxing with honeycomb, and optional name tag hiding.
Can Fast Item Frames convert my existing item frames?
Yes, through an optional setting. When enabled, vanilla item frame entities are converted into item frame blocks as chunks load. It is a choice, not automatic, so you can keep existing frames unchanged.
