Freecam lets you detach your camera from your character and fly it independently through anything within render distance, without moving your player's body. It's a client-side mod for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge on Minecraft Java, with no server component required. Press F4 to enter Freecam, look around or fly to a new vantage point, then press it again to snap back to exactly where you left off.
How Freecam changes your view
Once enabled, Freecam separates your point of view from your player. You can fly through blocks within render distance and look at a build from angles you'd otherwise need creative or spectator mode to reach, all while your character stays put. Holding the Freecam key together with a number key (F4 plus 1 through 9) drops a fixed "tripod" camera, so you can set up several viewpoints around a build or a shot and switch between them, which is the feature most builders and recorders reach for it for.
Installing Freecam
- 1.Install the matching mod loader for your Minecraft version: Fabric Loader, Minecraft Forge, or NeoForge.
- 2.On Fabric, also install Fabric API. Forge and NeoForge builds need nothing extra.
- 3.Drop the Freecam jar into your mods folder and launch the matching loader profile.
- 4.Optional: install Mod Menu on Fabric to reach Freecam's settings screen from the pause menu.
Loader and version support
Freecam is actively maintained on Fabric and NeoForge, both currently built for Minecraft 26.2. Forge lags well behind: its highest-ever build only reaches Minecraft 1.20.4, released back in March 2025, and the mod's more recent Forge updates, right up to August 2026, have gone back to patching older 1.17.1 through 1.19.4 releases rather than pushing that ceiling any higher. Anyone running a current Forge modpack should look for a NeoForge equivalent instead.

How do I install Freecam?

Does Freecam work with Forge?
Yes, but only up to Minecraft 1.20.4. Freecam's Forge build hasn't moved past that version since March 2025, even though the mod still receives Forge updates for older 1.17.1 through 1.19.4 releases. Fabric and NeoForge both reach the current 26.2 release, so Forge users are the furthest behind.
Is Freecam cheating, and is it allowed on servers?
Freecam doesn't reveal hidden ore or item locations like an x-ray mod, but detaching the camera can still scout a layout, peek around a corner, or check for nearby players without moving your body, which is a real edge in some contexts. Many creative, building, and recording servers allow it. Competitive PvP servers often ban it, so check the server's own rules before installing it.
Does Freecam need Fabric API or other mods?
On Fabric, yes: Freecam depends on Fabric API to load. Cloth Config ships bundled inside the Freecam jar itself, so it never needs a separate download. Mod Menu is optional on Fabric and only adds a settings screen entry point. Forge and NeoForge builds need nothing beyond the loader itself.
Is Freecam safe to use?
Freecam is MIT licensed, open source, and distributed through Modrinth and CurseForge by the same team, with over 20 million downloads. It's client-side only, so it makes no changes to a server. The real risk isn't the mod itself, it's getting banned from a server whose rules don't allow camera-detach mods.
