Indium

Indium restores Fabric Rendering API support inside Sodium so mods with custom block and item models render correctly. Sodium 0.6.0 and newer added this natively, so Indium now matters only on older Sodium releases.

Indium is a Fabric and Quilt addon that restores Fabric Rendering API support inside the Sodium rendering optimization mod, so mods with custom block and item models keep rendering correctly. It runs client side only. Its most recently published build (February 2025) targets Minecraft 1.20.1 through 1.20.6, and Sodium 0.6.0 added the same support natively, which makes Indium a legacy addon for players staying on older Sodium releases rather than something every Sodium user still needs.

Why Sodium needs the Fabric Rendering API restored

The Fabric Rendering API lets mods register custom block and item models with effects the vanilla renderer cannot draw. Fabric API ships a reference implementation of that API called Indigo, but Indigo disables itself once Sodium replaces the renderer, since Indigo was never written for Sodium's rendering pipeline. That left mods using the Fabric Rendering API, Continuity and LambdaBetterGrass among them, showing broken or missing textures under Sodium alone. Indium re-implements the same rendering API specifically for Sodium's renderer, based on Indigo's own code, so those mods work again. Sodium is a required dependency, and Sodium itself needs Fabric API underneath, so both sit below Indium in the mod list.

Installation on Fabric and Quilt

  1. 1.Install Fabric Loader or Quilt Loader for the exact Minecraft version you plan to play.
  2. 2.Add Sodium 0.5.x to the mods folder. Indium's last build was tested against Sodium 0.5.11 and will not load correctly with Sodium 0.6.0 or newer.
  3. 3.Add Fabric API for the same Minecraft version, since Sodium depends on it.
  4. 4.Drop the Indium jar into the same mods folder and launch once to confirm no mod-loading errors appear.

Which Minecraft versions Indium covers

Indium's build history runs from Minecraft 1.16.5 through 1.21.1, but the version numbers do not climb in a straight line with the file dates. Build 1.0.35, from August 2024, is the one that reaches 1.21 and 1.21.1. The most recent build, 1.0.36 from February 2025, targets only 1.20.1, 1.20.5, and 1.20.6, identically for Fabric and Quilt. A player on 1.21.1 needs the older 1.0.35 file specifically, not whatever Modrinth shows as the newest download, and there has been no build since February 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Indium.

5 questions

Is Indium compatible with the current version of Sodium?

No, not the newest one. Sodium 0.6.0 added native Fabric Rendering API support, so current Sodium releases work without Indium, and Indium is not compatible with Sodium 0.6.0 or newer. Indium only matters if you are deliberately running an older Sodium release, 0.5.x, on Minecraft 1.20.6 or earlier, where mods like Continuity or LambdaBetterGrass still need the rendering API restored.

How do I install Indium?

Install Fabric Loader or Quilt Loader for your target Minecraft version, add Fabric API and Sodium 0.5.x to the mods folder, then add the Indium jar alongside them. Launch once to confirm no mod-loading errors. Indium alone does nothing without Sodium installed underneath it.

Which Minecraft version does Indium support?

Indium's build history spans 1.16.5 through 1.21.1. The 1.21 and 1.21.1 ceiling came from build 1.0.35 in August 2024. The newest published build, 1.0.36 from February 2025, only targets 1.20.1, 1.20.5, and 1.20.6, so a 1.21.1 install needs that older 1.0.35 file specifically.

Does Indium work with Iris shaders?

Iris bundles its own fork of Sodium, and that fork does not always track the latest Indium build. If you run Iris alongside Sodium and Indium, check the specific shader pack and Iris build for known Indium compatibility notes before assuming the newest Indium release works.

Is Indium safe to use?

Indium is released under the Apache License 2.0 by comp500, with source public on GitHub and builds published on Modrinth. Get it from the official Modrinth project page or GitHub releases rather than a third-party mirror, since a repackaged copy could be tampered with.
