The Malum mod is a dark magic overhaul by SammySemicolon, centred on spirit arcana, a study of soul magic. It runs on NeoForge and Forge, and Fabric and Quilt releases have stopped. It must be installed on both sides, so a multiplayer host and every player need it.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 1.21.1. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.20.1 to 1.21.1 require Lodestone and Curios API.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.20.1. The newest build requires Lodestone and Curios API.
  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.20.1, builds stopped after September 2024. The newest build requires Trinkets, Cardinal Components API, Fabric API, Lodestone and Porting Lib; some builds for 1.20.1 require Trinkets, Cardinal Components API, Lodestone and Porting Lib; some builds for 1.20.1 require Fabric API and Lodestone; some builds for 1.20.1 require Trinkets, Cardinal Components API, Fabric API and Lodestone.
  • Quilt: Minecraft 1.20.1, builds stopped after September 2024. What Malum adds

Progress runs through the Encyclopedia Arcana, an in-world journal. It is open ended, so you pick which branch of magic to chase first rather than follow a fixed order.

  • Spirit infusion, the core process for crafting magical items, and spirit focusing, which materialises new resources from raw spirit matter.
  • Trinkets, armour, tools and weapons, each set with its own effect and some with synergy between them.
  • Totem magic, where each spirit unlocks its own rituals.
  • Runewood trees with a full set of wood blocks, plus underground ores such as cthonic gold, soulstone and natural quartz.

Installing Malum

  1. 1.Install NeoForge or Forge for your Java instance, following the Forge and NeoForge guide if you have not done it before.
  2. 2.Add the dependencies listed for your loader. Most releases need Lodestone and Curios API, though the newest NeoForge release needs nothing extra.
  3. 3.Place the Malum file in the mods folder, on the host and on every player's install, then launch with the loader's profile.

Trade-offs

Fabric and Quilt players are stuck on old releases, and those need a long dependency chain including Trinkets, Cardinal Components API and Porting Lib. Malum's focus is soul magic and its derivatives, a narrow scope by design.

Questions about Malum.

4 questions

Which loaders does Malum support?

Malum runs on NeoForge and Forge. Fabric and Quilt releases exist for 1.20.1 but stopped after September 2024, so they no longer receive updates. For a current setup, choose NeoForge, which has the newest release.

Do I need Lodestone to run Malum?

Most releases need Lodestone and Curios API. The newest NeoForge release lists no dependencies, but older NeoForge releases, and the Forge release, require both. Check the dependency list for the exact file you pick.

Does Malum work on multiplayer servers?

Malum is required on both sides, so a multiplayer host and every player install it. Dependencies depend on the loader and the release you pick, so check the list for your file. Fabric and Quilt releases have stopped, which leaves NeoForge and Forge as the current options.

Is Malum available for Bedrock?

No. Malum is a Java mod for NeoForge and Forge, and Bedrock cannot load mods of this kind.
