Mob Captains adds a rare mob variant to Minecraft Java that spawns at common, uncommon, rare, or legendary rarity, and always drops equipment enchanted in combinations vanilla loot tables cannot produce. It needs no other mods, and the same feature ships two ways: a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt jar for players who already run a loader, and a plain data pack for anyone who does not. The current build, v3.4.0, reaches Minecraft 1.21.10 on every one of those distributions.
What Mob Captains changes in Minecraft
- Ordinary mobs have a small, configurable chance to spawn as a Mob Captain instead, at one of four rarities: common, uncommon, rare, or legendary.
- Every Mob Captain drops gear enchanted with combinations the vanilla enchanting table and anvil cannot create.
- Loot table weights per rarity live at /data/ps-mob/loot_tables/captains, and the items themselves at /data/ps-mob/loot_tables/base, so the drop pool is editable without a resource editor.
- An in-game chat menu, opened with /function ps-mob:config by an operator, exposes spawn chance, cooldown, chat and sound notifications, glow, and spawn-beam settings without editing files.
- The mod credits Atomic Stryker's Infernal Mobs as its inspiration, and plays a similar role: it makes ordinary mob encounters occasionally dangerous and worth the fight.
Mod jar or data pack, which to install
A Minecraft mod is code that patches the game itself, and it only runs on the loader program it was built for; a data pack is a folder of vanilla-format files that any Minecraft Java install can read, no loader required. Mob Captains is built entirely from data pack mechanics, with no custom code, so the two builds behave the same in play. Pick the loader jar if your world already runs Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt for other mods, since it drops into your mods folder like anything else there. Pick the plain data pack if you play vanilla or do not want to touch a loader at all.
Installing Mob Captains
- 1.On the Modrinth project page, filter by your loader (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt) or by Data Pack, and download the file matching your Minecraft version.
- 2.For a loader jar, drop it into the mods folder after installing the matching loader with the Fabric install guide or your loader's own installer.
- 3.For the data pack, place the extracted folder in your world's datapacks folder, then run /reload or restart the world.
- 4.Load into the world as an operator and run /function ps-mob:config once to confirm the mod is active and to set spawn chance and notification preferences.
Server, client, and multiplayer
Mob Captains changes what spawns and what drops, both server-side mechanics, so a server needs it installed for captains to appear at all. Single-player and LAN worlds run it the same way, since the client also hosts the world logic there. Clients joining a server that already runs Mob Captains do not need to install anything themselves to see or fight the captains that spawn.
Questions about Mob Captains.
5 questions
Is Mob Captains a mod or a data pack?
Both. The feature is built entirely from data pack mechanics, and Modrinth ships it as a plain data pack for vanilla worlds and as separate Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt jars for players who already run a loader. Either build behaves the same in play, so the choice comes down to whether your world already uses a loader.
What does a Mob Captain drop?
Equipment enchanted with combinations vanilla enchanting cannot produce, sometimes called illegal enchantments. Rarer captains, up through legendary, tend toward stronger combinations. The drop pool and its weighting per rarity are editable in the pack's loot table files if the defaults are not to your taste.
Does Mob Captains need any other mods?
No. Modrinth lists no dependencies for any version, and every distribution, loader jar or data pack, is self-contained. You do not need Fabric API or any library mod for it to work.
Which Minecraft version does Mob Captains support?
The current release, v3.4.0, covers Minecraft 1.21.2 through 1.21.10 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, and as a plain data pack, all published the same day. The project's version history reaches back to 1.17 for players on older worlds.
Do I need Mob Captains on the server, the client, or both?
Install it on the server, or in your single-player world's save, since spawning and loot are both server-side logic. Players connecting to a server that already runs it see the captains and can fight them without installing anything on their own client.
