Coals to Gunpowder is a coals to gunpowder datapack and mod in one project. It adds a single smelting recipe that turns coal or charcoal into gunpowder. It runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, or as a plain datapack with no loader at all. The mod is needed on the host side, and joining players can go without it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.15 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What the recipe does

Put coal or charcoal in a furnace or a blast furnace, and gunpowder comes out. That is the whole feature. The creator calls it handy for crafting rockets and flying with elytra.

  • Input: coal or charcoal.
  • Smelted in: furnace or blast furnace.
  • Output: gunpowder.

Installing the mod or the datapack

Pick one route. Both give the same recipe, and neither asks for a dependency. If you are new to loaders, the guide on installing Minecraft mods on Java covers the profile setup.

  1. 1.Mod route: drop the mod file into the mods folder of your instance, then restart the game. Use the file that matches your loader.
  2. 2.Datapack route: drop the .zip into your world's datapacks folder, then reload the world or run /reload.

Trade-offs

The feature set is deliberately narrow. It also makes gunpowder cheap, which changes the balance of rocket and elytra play in a world that expects mob drops to gate it. Check that fits before you add it to a shared world.

Questions about Coals to Gunpowder.

4 questions

How do I make gunpowder from coal in Minecraft?

With Coals to Gunpowder installed, place coal or charcoal in a furnace or blast furnace and smelt it. The output is gunpowder. Use the mod file for your loader or the datapack zip, and make sure it is active in the world. The recipe works the same either way, and neither route needs a dependency.

Is Coals to Gunpowder a mod or a datapack?

Both. The project ships loader files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, plus a plain datapack zip. They add the same recipe, so choose the one that fits your setup.

How do I install the Coals to Gunpowder datapack?

Drop the .zip file into your world's datapacks folder. Then reload the world or run the /reload command. The recipe becomes available once the datapack loads, and no other files are required.

Do players need the mod to join a multiplayer world?

No. The mod is required on the host side, and it is optional for players who join. Install the loader file on the host's instance and restart the game. Players who join can leave the file out, though they may add it if they want.
