Plasmo Voice

Plasmo Voice adds proximity voice chat to Minecraft Java Edition, so nearby players hear each other over a microphone and voices fade as they walk apart. It runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge clients against a matching server or proxy build, and only players who install the client mod can talk.

Minecraft Java Edition has no voice chat of its own. Plasmo Voice adds it, with volume that fades as players walk apart and optional occlusion that muffles voices through blocks. It installs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge clients, has server builds for Paper, Spigot and Folia plus BungeeCord and Velocity proxies, and only works when both halves are in place, the server file and each player's client mod.

What Plasmo Voice chat adds to Minecraft

Audio runs through an OpenAL engine, so a player speaking to your left sounds like they are to your left. Your microphone is encoded with the Opus codec and sent only to players inside the configured distance, which keeps bandwidth low on a busy server. RNNoise suppression cleans up fan and keyboard noise, and small icons above each head show who is talking, who is muted, and who has no mod installed at all.

  • Distance-based volume with an adjustable voice chat range.
  • Push to talk or voice activation, with an activation threshold you set yourself.
  • Hold right mouse button on a player and scroll to change that player's volume.
  • Optional sound occlusion through blocks and directional sources that go quieter when a speaker faces away.
  • Server-side mute commands, permissions support and vanish support.
  • A Discord-style in-game overlay with configurable icon positions.

Setting up a Plasmo Voice server

On a Fabric, Forge or NeoForge server, the same build family goes on the server and on every player who wants to talk. Paper, Spigot and Folia servers take the Spigot build in the plugins folder, and BungeeCord or Velocity networks have their own proxy builds, so voice can follow a player across backend servers. Permissions hook into LuckPerms when it is present, and PlaceholderAPI is supported. Group channels, whisper and broadcast are not in the base mod, they are separate add-ons you install alongside it.

  1. 1.On the Modrinth page, pick the build that matches your setup, a Fabric, Forge or NeoForge file for a modded server, the Spigot file for Paper, Spigot or Folia, or a BungeeCord or Velocity file for a proxy.
  2. 2.Put the file in the server's mods or plugins folder and restart the server.
  3. 3.Install the matching client mod for your loader in the client mods folder. The Fabric build also needs Fabric API.
  4. 4.Join the server, press V to open voice settings, then choose your microphone and output device.

Loader and version support

The loaders are not on the same Minecraft version, and that is the thing to check before planning around this mod. Fabric and NeoForge have moved to 26.2, while the newest Forge build stops at 1.21.1. Server and proxy files cover a much wider range in a single download. Everything below is release 2.1.16, published on 25 August 2026.

  • Fabric, file fabric-26.2-2.1.16, for Minecraft 26.2.
  • NeoForge, file neoforge-26.2-2.1.16, for Minecraft 26.2.
  • Forge, file forge-1.21.1-2.1.16, for Minecraft 1.21 and 1.21.1 only.
  • Paper, Spigot and Folia, file spigot-2.1.16, covering 1.16.5 up to 26.2.
  • BungeeCord and Velocity, files bungeecord-2.1.16 and velocity-2.1.16, covering the same 1.16.5 to 26.2 range.

Plasmo Voice next to Simple Voice Chat

Simple Voice Chat is the better known option and the shorter road if you only want proximity chat working on one server. Plasmo Voice earns its place in two situations, a proxy network where dedicated BungeeCord and Velocity builds carry voice across backend servers, and a roleplay server that wants sound occlusion and directional audio. The cost is spread. Group channels, whisper and broadcast live in separate add-ons rather than the base mod, and the Forge line sits a whole version family behind Fabric and NeoForge.

Questions about Plasmo Voice.

5 questions

Does every player need the Plasmo Voice mod?

Only the players who want to talk. Plasmo Voice runs on the server and on each client, so anyone joining without the client mod can still connect and play as normal, they simply hear and speak nothing. Server owners can turn that around and configure the server to kick clients that do not have the mod installed.

How do I install Plasmo Voice on a server?

Download the build that matches your server software from the Modrinth page. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge servers take the mod file in the mods folder, Paper, Spigot and Folia servers take the Spigot build in the plugins folder, and BungeeCord or Velocity networks use their own proxy build. Restart the server, then have each player install the client mod for their loader.

Which Minecraft version does Plasmo Voice support?

The current release is 2.1.16, and the loaders are not in step. Fabric and NeoForge builds target Minecraft 26.2, while the newest Forge build stops at 1.21 and 1.21.1. The server and proxy builds for Paper, Spigot, Folia, BungeeCord and Velocity cover 1.16.5 up to 26.2 in one file. Check the loader you actually run first.

What is the difference between Plasmo Voice and Simple Voice Chat?

Both add proximity voice chat to Java Edition, and both need a server file plus a client mod on every talking player. Plasmo Voice ships dedicated BungeeCord and Velocity proxy builds and offers optional sound occlusion and directional audio. It also moves group channels, whisper and broadcast into separate add-ons, so the base mod is leaner than the feature list suggests.

Does Plasmo Voice work on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

No. Plasmo Voice is a Java Edition mod, and a Java mod file never runs on Bedrock Edition, which is a separate build of the game with its own add-on format. Bedrock players joining a Java server through a Geyser proxy cannot use it either, because voice chat needs the client mod, and that only exists for Java loaders.
