Emoji Type is an emoji type mod for Minecraft Java that swaps keywords such as :skull: for the matching emoji or symbol. It runs on Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with Forge builds now stopped, and it is client-side only. More than 200 emojis are available through simple shortcodes, with no resource pack or texture change.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Mod Menu; some builds for 1.16.5 to 1.20.1 require Fabric API; some builds for 1.16.5 to 1.19 require Cloth Config API.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.19 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Mod Menu; builds for 1.19 to 1.19.4 require Fabric API.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 1.20.4, builds stopped after December 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Cloth Config API.
How typing works
Press the colon key in a chat box and a live list of suggestions appears. Keep typing, for example :sw, then pick an entry with the arrow keys or the mouse. Signs and anvils are more restrictive than chat, so there is no autocomplete there. Type the full code, such as , and it converts on its own.
The mod adds no new glyphs. The emojis are standard Unicode characters the game already contains, so other players see them without the mod. They also stay on signs and in books if you remove it.
Emoji packs and settings
Emojis come in packs that you switch on or off. Bundled packs cover Minecraft Essentials (tools, weapons, status icons), Text Art faces and circled Letter Emojis. A built-in visual editor lets you create and edit your own. Open settings through Mod Menu on Fabric and Quilt, or the Mods screen on NeoForge.
- Packs are YAML files in config/emojitype/emoji_packs/.
- To share a pack, send the .yaml file. A friend drops it in the same folder.
- Install by placing the mod file in your mods folder on the client only.
Trade-offs
Installing it on a multiplayer host does nothing. Some hosts run plugins that alter chat, and the developer cannot promise every symbol survives them. Signs and anvils also lack the suggestion list, so you need to remember the full keyword.
Questions about Emoji Type.
4 questions
Can other players see my emojis if they do not have Emoji Type?
Yes. The emojis are standard Unicode characters already in the game, so anyone on a modern client sees them. The mod only makes typing them easier. Some multiplayer hosts use chat plugins that can interfere, so a symbol may not always come through.
Do I need Emoji Type on a multiplayer server?
No. It is client-side only and does nothing when installed on a host. Put it in your own mods folder and it works on servers you join, unless a chat plugin there alters the message.
Why is there no autocomplete on signs and anvils?
Those interfaces are more restrictive than chat. Type the full keyword, such as :check:, and it converts automatically. The suggestion list after pressing the colon key only appears in chat.
What happens to my emojis if I uninstall Emoji Type?
They stay. The mod does not add emojis, it only helps you type characters the game already has, so text already placed on signs or in books remains.
