RenderScale

RenderScale sets the rendering resolution separately from the interface. Drop it for frames on a weak machine, or raise it for smoother edges.

RenderScale is a mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge that changes the resolution the world renders at while leaving the UI untouched. Lower the scale to gain frames on a weak machine, or raise it for supersampled antialiasing. It is a fork of ResolutionControl++ with NeoForge support added, and it runs on the player's side only.

What it does

Press U (sometimes O) to change the multiplier, or open the config screen through Mod Menu. The creator also recommends it for laptops with retina displays. The mod adds three extras:

  • FSR 1 upscaling, available on 1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 1.21.11 onward. DLSS and FSR 2+ are not planned.
  • Dynamic scaling, which keeps changing the scale to hold your target FPS.
  • Optional sharpening as a post-processing step.

Installation

  1. 1.Install the loader that matches your release, using the Fabric guide or the Forge and NeoForge guide.
  2. 2.Add the mod file and its dependencies to the mods folder. The newest Fabric and NeoForge releases need Cloth Config API, and Fabric also needs Fabric API.
  3. 3.Launch with the loader profile, then press U in a world to adjust the scale.

The newest Forge release for 1.20.1 lists no required dependencies. Older Fabric releases for 1.21 to 1.21.4 also asked for Mod Menu.

Compatibility and trade-offs

RenderScale aims to work with any mod, including Sodium and Iris, though some mods can still break it. On 26.2 and later it works with Vulkan, Iris Vulkan included. Fabric and NeoForge cover 1.21.2 and above, NeoForge skips 1.20.1, and Forge covers 1.20.1 only. The 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 releases do not support Fabulous graphics.

The latest releases are labelled beta, so expect rough edges. For large screenshots, the creator points to Fabrishot.

Questions about RenderScale.

4 questions

Should I turn RenderScale on or off for a weak PC?

Turn it on and lower the multiplier. Rendering at a smaller resolution cuts the pixels your GPU draws while the UI stays sharp. Dynamic scaling can adjust the value automatically to hold a target FPS, but it is unavailable while shaders are enabled.

Does RenderScale work with Sodium and Iris?

It aims to work with any mod, Sodium and Iris included. Some mods can still break it, so report problems on the issue tracker with your latest logs. On 26.2 and later it also works with Vulkan, including Iris Vulkan.

Does RenderScale work on multiplayer worlds?

It only changes how your own screen renders, so it is installed on the player's machine. Hosts do not run it, and it is not supported on a dedicated host. It is not compatible with Lunar Client or Feather Client.

How do I change the render scale in RenderScale?

Press U in a world, or O on some setups, to change the multiplier. You can also open the mod's config screen through Mod Menu.
