Resource Pack Overrides

A library-style utility for modpack makers that keeps chosen resource packs active, hides internal ones and tidies the pack selection screen. It runs on the client only.

Resource Pack Overrides is a resource pack overrides mod for modpack authors on Fabric and NeoForge, with older Forge builds that have stopped. It decides how preinstalled resource packs appear and behave in the pack selection screen. It is needed on the client only, and a dedicated server does not support it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.20.4, builds stopped after February 2024. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

Shipping a fixed pack configuration is fragile, because a failed resource reload can reset it. This mod stores your preferred set and order of packs and restores it after such a reset. Players keep the setup the pack author intended.

  • Persistent defaults: define the packs and their order to restore when loading resets.
  • Locked packs: stop critical packs from being disabled or moved.
  • Hidden packs: keep technical or background packs off the selection screen.
  • Custom presentation: override names, descriptions and compatibility warnings.
  • Pack ordering: set where packs appear and how they layer with other enabled resources.

Installation and configuration

Install it like any other loader mod, following the Java mod install guide if you are new to it. It must be present on the client, since the screen it edits exists only there.

All settings live in one file, .minecraft/config/resourcepackoverrides.json. A minimal file is generated automatically when none exists. Full options and examples are documented in the README on GitHub, which is the place to look for the exact syntax of each override.

Trade-offs

The scope is narrow by design. It manages pack presentation and defaults. Locking and hiding packs also takes control away from players, so use those options for packs that genuinely must stay on.

Questions about Resource Pack Overrides.

4 questions

Does Resource Pack Overrides work on multiplayer servers?

It is installed on the client only, and a dedicated server does not support it. Installation is required on the client. Each player who should get the managed pack setup needs the mod in their own mods folder, made for their own loader.

What does Resource Pack Overrides do?

It lets you keep important resource packs active, hide internal ones, lock packs in place, reorder them and change how their names, descriptions and compatibility warnings appear. It can also restore your default pack setup after a failed resource reload.

Where is the Resource Pack Overrides config file?

Everything is set in a single file at .minecraft/config/resourcepackoverrides.json. A minimal version is generated automatically if it is missing. The README on GitHub lists every option with examples, so start there when writing your rules.

Does Resource Pack Overrides work with Forge?

Forge builds exist only for older releases, and they stopped in February 2024. Current development continues on Fabric and NeoForge, so choose one of those loaders for any recent release.
