Sophisticated Backpacks is a Forge and NeoForge mod for Minecraft Java that adds six tiers of craftable backpacks: Leather, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. Each tier increases both the number of storage slots and the number of upgrade slots available, letting you tailor the backpack to your playstyle as you progress. Backpacks can be worn in the chest slot (and rendered on your character), placed in the world as a block-style container, or used with Curios to occupy a dedicated Back slot.
Backpack Tiers and Capacity
Six tiers scale with Minecraft's natural progression curve. Each step up provides more rows of inventory and an additional upgrade slot, so higher-tier backpacks can carry more while doing more work at the same time.
- 1.Leather: the entry-level tier, crafted with leather and a chest. Fewest slots and one upgrade slot.
- 2.Copper: modest capacity increase, unlocks a second upgrade slot.
- 3.Iron: mid-game option suitable for mining and combat runs.
- 4.Gold: larger inventory with room for several active upgrades.
- 5.Diamond: late-game tier with substantial capacity and multiple upgrade slots.
- 6.Netherite: the top tier, offering the most storage rows and upgrade slots of any backpack.

Upgrade System
Upgrade slots are filled with functional modules that change how the backpack collects, sorts, or filters items. Both standard and advanced variants exist for most upgrade types: advanced versions add more filter slots and support filtering by mod, tag, NBT data, and damage value.
- Pickup Upgrade: automatically collects items into the backpack based on a configurable filter, either when worn by the player or when placed as a world container.
- Magnet Upgrade: teleports nearby items directly into the backpack within a configurable range. Advanced variant can also collect experience orbs and convert them to XP fluid if a Tank Upgrade is present.
- Compacting Upgrade: auto-crafts items using 2x2 and 3x3 recipes, useful for converting raw materials like coal, redstone, or iron nuggets into compact forms.
- Feeding Upgrade: automatically feeds the player using stored food when hunger drops. Configurable filters let you exclude food items with negative effects.
- Void Upgrade: destroys items matching a configured filter, preventing unwanted loot from filling inventory slots.
- Filter Upgrade: restricts which items can be inserted or extracted via automation, giving precise control over piped inventories.
Placing Backpacks in the World
Sneak-right-click any block while holding a backpack to place it. Once set down, it behaves like a standard block container: other players or automation systems can interact with it directly. Hoppers, pipes, and modded machines that work with inventories can insert or extract items. Filter and Void upgrades continue to apply in block form. To pick it back up, sneak-right-click it with an empty hand, or break it and collect it as an item, keeping all stored contents intact.

Backpack Colors and Personalization
Backpacks support two independent color channels: a main color and an accent color. To dye a backpack, place it in a crafting grid with dyes. Dyes placed to the left of the backpack change the main color; dyes to the right change the accent. Dyes in the same column as the backpack affect both. Color mixes blend additively like leather armor, and previous colors can be washed off by right-clicking the backpack on a water-filled cauldron.

The mod does not require any server-side configuration beyond having the .jar files present.
