Spell Engine is a data driven magic library for Minecraft Java, built for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. It gives other mods a shared system for defining spells, casting behavior, and equipment sets in JSON, rather than adding spells of its own. Fabric and NeoForge track the current 26.2 release together, while the Forge build is capped at 1.20.1.
What Spell Engine adds
On its own, Spell Engine has no spells a player notices directly. It is a framework: spell definitions live in JSON data files with hot-reloading and network sync, and cover cast modes such as instant, charged, and channeled casts, along with targeting, projectile behavior, and impact effects like damage, healing, or status changes. Weapons receive spells through a container system, and equipment sets can grant set bonuses across armor, weapons, and trinkets. Mod developers use Spell Engine to build classes and abilities, and players mostly meet it running underneath content packs, including the Wizards and Berserker RPG-class mods.
Dependencies and trinket-slot support
Spell Engine is not standalone, and its dependency chain differs by loader. Every loader needs Cloth Config API and Spell Power Attributes, since spell damage is calculated through Spell Power's entity attributes. Fabric additionally needs Fabric API. Trinket-slot integration follows each loader's own ecosystem: current Fabric builds use Trinkets Updated for the spell book, scroll, and quiver slots, while Forge and NeoForge use Curios API for the same slots instead. Cast animations come from playerAnimator on older builds or the newer Player Animation Library on the current Fabric and NeoForge 26.2 releases.
- Cloth Config API, required on every loader
- Spell Power Attributes, required on every loader, drives spell damage
- Fabric API, required on Fabric only
- Trinkets or Trinkets Updated, required on Fabric, for spell-book and quiver slots
- Curios API, required on Forge and NeoForge, for the same trinket slots
- playerAnimator or Player Animation Library, required on every loader, for cast animations
Loader and version support
Fabric and NeoForge both reach the current 26.2 release. Forge is the exception: its most recent build stays on Minecraft 1.20.1 and has not followed the project onto the newer 26.x versions. Anyone running a current Minecraft release needs the Fabric or NeoForge build rather than Forge.

Questions about Spell Engine.
5 questions
Does Spell Engine work with Forge?
Yes, but the Forge build is capped at Minecraft 1.20.1 and has not received the newer 26.x game-version updates that Fabric and NeoForge already have. Players on a current Minecraft release need the Fabric or NeoForge build instead of Forge.
Is Spell Engine on NeoForge?
Yes. Spell Engine ships Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge builds, and the NeoForge build tracks the same 26.2 release as Fabric. Forge is the outlier here, staying on 1.20.1 while Fabric and NeoForge move forward together.
What does Spell Engine actually add to my game?
Nothing by itself. Spell Engine is a library that gives other mods a shared, data driven way to define spells, casting behavior, and equipment set bonuses. Players usually meet it running underneath a content mod, such as one of the Wizards or Berserker RPG-class mods, rather than installing it alone.
What mods does Spell Engine need to run?
Cloth Config API and Spell Power Attributes on every loader, plus Fabric API on Fabric. Trinket-slot support comes from Trinkets or Trinkets Updated on Fabric and Curios API on Forge and NeoForge, and cast animations come from playerAnimator or the newer Player Animation Library depending on the build.
Is Spell Engine safe to download?
Spell Engine is open source under the GPL-3.0-only license and distributed through Modrinth, GitHub, and CurseForge under the same project. Downloading it from any of those official listings, rather than a third-party mirror, is the safest path.
