Blood Magic is a Forge-only mod for Minecraft Java that turns health into a magical currency called Life Essence, spent through networks of sacrificial altars, rituals, and rune-marked rooms. WayofTime and a small team have kept it active on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, with a lineage stretching back to 1.7.2. There is no Fabric or NeoForge build; everything here runs on Forge.
What Blood Magic changes in Minecraft
The core loop starts at a Blood Altar. Place an item in it, fill it with Life Essence drawn from your own health or from mobs struck with the Sacrificial Dagger, and craft your way up five altar tiers. Higher tiers unlock item-binding rituals, the Hellfire Forge, the Alchemy Table, and eventually a Demon Realm dimension with its own ores and mobs. Progress is read through Patchouli's in-game guidebook, the Sanguine Scientum, rather than an external wiki. It sits in the same FTB-adjacent magic-mod cluster as Botania, though Botania's mana-and-flowers system and Blood Magic's blood-and-sacrifice system share almost no mechanics.
- Currency: Life Essence (LP), generated by self-sacrifice or the Sacrificial Dagger on mobs.
- Core structure: the Blood Altar, upgradeable through five tiers.
- Late-game content: rituals, the Hellfire Forge, the Alchemy Table, and the Demon Realm dimension.
- In-game guide: the Sanguine Scientum book, powered by Patchouli.
Installing Blood Magic on Forge
Blood Magic only ships for Forge, and the current 1.20.1 builds require Patchouli so the Sanguine Scientum guidebook can load; the mod will not start without it. Match both jars to the same Forge and Minecraft version, since Blood Magic follows Forge's usual per-version jar split rather than shipping one universal file.
- 1.Install Forge for the version you plan to play (1.20.1 for the current release line).
- 2.Download the matching Blood Magic jar from Modrinth or CurseForge.
- 3.Download Patchouli for the same Minecraft version; Blood Magic will not launch without it.
- 4.Copy both jars into the mods folder on client and server, since Blood Magic runs on both sides.
Which Minecraft versions Blood Magic supports
The newest Forge build, 3.3.8-50, released 26 July 2026 for Minecraft 1.20.1, and Blood Magic has held on that version for most of the past year rather than chasing a 1.21.x port. Earlier lines cover 1.16.3 through 1.18.2, and a long-running legacy branch supports 1.7.2 through 1.12.2, the version most FTB modpack veterans remember from the original Blood Magic: Alchemical Wizardry. Builds before 1.16.3 use Guide-API instead of Patchouli for the in-game book; that dependency was replaced project-wide starting with the 1.16.3 line.
Known issues and limitations
Not everything from the 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 versions carried over. Some older items, rituals, and Demon Will mechanics were dropped or reworked for balance when the mod moved to 1.16 and later, so guides and videos filmed on 1.12.2 will not match the current altar tiers or ritual list exactly. The in-game Sanguine Scientum reflects what a specific build actually includes.
The Ultimate Guide to Blood Magic (1.20.1)
Questions about Blood Magic.
5 questions
What does the Blood Magic mod do?
Blood Magic turns the player's health into Life Essence, a currency spent at sacrificial altars to unlock rituals, alchemy, and a Demon Realm dimension. It replaces vanilla enchanting and potion brewing with a five-tier altar progression built around willing sacrifice instead of mob farming.
How do I get started with Blood Magic?
Build a Tier 1 Blood Altar from the recipe in the Sanguine Scientum guidebook, then hit yourself with the included Sacrificial Dagger while holding a Weak Blood Orb to fill it with Life Essence. The guidebook, powered by Patchouli, walks through every altar tier from there.
Does Blood Magic require Patchouli?
Yes, on every current Forge build. Patchouli powers the Sanguine Scientum, Blood Magic's in-game guidebook, and the mod will not launch without it. Versions before 1.16.3 used a different library, Guide-API, for the same job.
Is Blood Magic available for Fabric or NeoForge?
No. Blood Magic has only ever shipped for Forge, across every version from 1.7.2 up to the current 1.20.1 release. There is no Fabric or NeoForge port, so modpacks built on those loaders need a different blood-magic-style mod.
Which Minecraft version does Blood Magic support?
The active line runs on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, last updated 26 July 2026. Earlier Forge releases cover 1.16.3 through 1.18.2, and a long-supported legacy branch reaches back through 1.7.2 to 1.12.2 for older modpacks.
