Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is a food mod for NeoForge that rewards dietary variety. It counts the unique foods a player has eaten and grants permanent hearts as they pass milestones. Older Forge builds exist but have stopped, and the mod belongs on both the client and the server.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.12.2 to 1.20.2, builds stopped after November 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies; builds for 1.12.2 require AppleCore.

How the hearts work

Where the original Spice of Life punishes repetitive eating, this mod uses the carrot instead of the stick. Each new food adds to a personal list, and crossing a milestone raises max health for good. The default configuration takes a player from 10 to 20 hearts by eating most non-poisonous vanilla foods.

The design leans toward modpacks. Pairing it with Pam's HarvestCraft or other food mods gives players a reason to explore a complex cooking system. In plain vanilla the reward ceiling arrives quickly, so the mod pays off most when many foods are in play.

Food Book and commands

  • Food Book: craft it by combining a book and a carrot in any shape. It shows overall progress and lists foods eaten and not yet eaten (the second list can be turned off in config).
  • /foodlist size: shows how many unique foods you have eaten and how many more reach the next milestone.
  • /foodlist clear: wipes the stored list and resets your hearts, handy when testing config changes or starting over.
  • /foodlist sync: forces the food list to resync to the client when the two disagree.

Configuration

Starting hearts, which can be fewer than 10, the number of foods per milestone and the hearts gained per milestone are all adjustable. Settings split in two. Visual options sit in the regular config folder and are not synced. Milestones, hearts and the blacklist live in each world, for example saves/[world name]/serverconfig/solcarrot-server.toml, even in singleplayer, and sync to the client. Place a copy at defaultconfigs/solcarrot-server.toml to set defaults for new worlds.

Installation

  1. 1.Install NeoForge for your Minecraft release, following the Forge and NeoForge guide.
  2. 2.Put the mod file in the mods folder of the game directory, on the server as well as on each player's machine.
  3. 3.Launch with the NeoForge profile, then adjust the world's server config if you want different milestones.

Questions about Spice of Life: Carrot Edition.

4 questions

Is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition the same as Spice of Life?

No. It is not a fork of the original Spice of Life, and the two are compatible. They share the food-variety idea but reverse the effect. This mod grants permanent extra hearts for eating new foods instead of penalising repetitive eating.

Does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work on servers?

Yes. Its files are tagged for both client and server. Milestones, hearts and the blacklist are stored in each world's serverconfig folder and synced to players, so server owners control those values.

Where is the Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config file?

Visual options are in the regular config folder and are not synced. Gameplay settings are in the world folder, for example saves/[world name]/serverconfig/solcarrot-server.toml. A copy in defaultconfigs/ supplies defaults for new worlds.

Is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition still updated for Forge?

No. Forge builds stopped after November 2023, and current builds target NeoForge. The newest NeoForge build needs no dependencies. Older pre-1.14 builds for Forge require AppleCore.
