The Lost Cities

McJty's worldgen mod swaps the normal Overworld for a ruined, sprawling civilization of skyscrapers, highways and subways. Pick a profile to decide how dense, damaged or dangerous the cities are.

The Lost Cities mod replaces the Overworld with an abandoned civilization of ruined skyscrapers, apartment blocks, factories, roads, highways, bridges, tunnels and subways. It ships for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge and is required on the server, with no player-side support. Cities blend into the normal terrain, so the mod pairs with biome and terrain mods.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 26.2. The newest build requires Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally The One Probe.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.10.2 to 1.20.1. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally The One Probe; builds for 1.10.2 to 1.11.2 require CompatLayer.

What it generates

  • Procedural cities with streets, parks, highways, bridges, railways, tunnels and subways, plus flooded areas and underground rooms.
  • Interiors with loot, spawners, cellars and lighting, with extensive damage and decay options.
  • Built-in profiles for very different worlds, from sprawling city regions and rare cities in wilderness to heavy ruins, safer buildings, tall skylines and domed cities.
  • An in-game configuration screen for choosing a profile and tuning generation.
  • Data-driven buildings, palettes, city styles and world styles for modpack authors.

Setting up a world

Pick the profile before the world exists. Changing it later only affects newly generated chunks and can leave abrupt borders. Profile names are case-sensitive, and a custom profile must be installed in the Lost Cities profile configuration first. For the loader setup itself, follow how to install mods on Java Edition.

On 1.21.1, 1.21.11 and 26.1.2 the dedicated setup runs through the regular config folder:

  1. 1.Install the matching NeoForge and Lost Cities releases, plus any biome or terrain mods the pack needs.
  2. 2.Start the server once, then stop it so the config files exist.
  3. 3.Open config/lostcities-server.toml and set selectedProfile in the profiles section, for example "default".
  4. 4.Set a new level-name in server.properties, or back up and remove the already generated world, then start again.

On 1.20.1 the safer route is to prepare the settings in single player. Create a world with Lost Cities enabled, then copy its lostcities-server.toml from the world's serverconfig folder into defaultconfigs on the server before the first start. The old level-type=lostcities setting no longer applies there.

Questions about The Lost Cities.

3 questions

Do players need The Lost Cities installed to join a server?

Not when no player-side Lost Cities features are required. The mod works server-side only, so vanilla players can connect. The mod is required on the server, though, and it does not support running on the player's side alone.

Can I change the Lost Cities profile after the world is created?

You can, but it only affects chunks generated afterwards. Already generated areas keep their old layout, which creates abrupt borders. Choose the profile before first generation, or back up and start a new world.

Is The Lost Cities compatible with other terrain and biome mods?

Yes. Cities are integrated into the normal terrain, so the mod can be combined with other biome and terrain mods. Install the same set of worldgen mods on the server, and choose the profile before generating the world.
