BetonQuest is a quest and conversation plugin for Minecraft servers running Paper or Spigot. Admins script storylines with multi-path NPC dialogue, journals, menus and notifications. It runs on the server only, and players join with a normal launcher. Spigot support has stopped, so Paper is the live target.

Server software and versions

  • Paper: Minecraft 1.13 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Spigot: Minecraft 1.13 to 1.21.4, builds stopped after January 2025. The newest build needs no dependencies.

Installation

  1. 1.Put the plugin file in the plugins folder of your Paper server. The plugin install guide covers the basics.
  2. 2.Restart the server.
  3. 3.Write your quests and conversations by following the documentation on betonquest.org.

The newest Paper and Spigot files need no other plugin to start. Players install nothing.

What it adds

  • Multi-path conversations with NPCs, with several endings that change what a player can do next. Five display styles are available.
  • A journal, a book that records a player's progress in a quest from their actions.
  • Quest logs, menus, items and a notification system that can use Minecraft's GUI elements.
  • Per-player language, so translated conversations appear in each player's own language.
  • Hiding of players from each other based on conditions, which makes story regions where a player is alone. Citizens NPCs and HolographicDisplays holograms can be hidden too.

Integrations

More than 40 plugins hook in, from WorldGuard and Citizens to EffectLib. Other quest plugins are supported as well, so old quests can stay and new quest lines can react to progress made in them. For more logic, you can reach into Skript or Denizen.

Questions about BetonQuest.

3 questions

How do I install BetonQuest?

Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of a Paper server and restart it. The newest files need no other plugin. Players do not install anything and join with a normal launcher. Quests and conversations are then written following the documentation on betonquest.org.

Can BetonQuest work alongside other quest plugins?

Yes. BetonQuest supports other quest plugins, so existing quests can stay in place. You can then add new quest lines that depend on the progress players made in the older plugin, instead of rebuilding everything at once.

Is BetonQuest free and open source?

Yes. The code is published on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3, and the plugin is free to use. Bug reports and feature requests go to the project's GitHub issues page.
