BigDoors is a plugin that adds animated doors, drawbridges, portcullises and sliding doors to a Spigot-family server. It runs on Folia, Paper, Purpur and Spigot, while an older Bukkit line has stopped. It lives on the server only, so players join as usual and install nothing.

Server software and versions

  • Folia, Paper, Purpur and Spigot: Minecraft 1.11 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Bukkit: Minecraft 1.11 to 1.21.8, builds stopped after July 2025. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What you can build

The plugin turns every block of a door into an entity, which is how the doors are animated. This is the v1 line of the plugin. A successor called AnimatedArchitecture is in development.

  • Four door types: big door, drawbridge, portcullis and sliding door.
  • A GUI for door management and a door creator that walks you through setup.
  • Redstone support, plus translations in German, Spanish, Norwegian, Japanese, Chinese and Italian.
  • Protection plugin support for GriefDefender, GriefPrevention, Konquest, Lands, Medieval Factions, PlotSquared, RedProtect, Towny Advanced and WorldGuard, including plugins that use WorldGuard underneath.

Installation and setup

  1. 1.Put the plugin file in your plugins folder and restart. The guide on installing plugins on a Paper or Spigot server covers the steps.
  2. 2.Decide on the optional resource pack. It holds only door sounds. If your server already uses a pack, set resourcePackEnabled to false in the config so it is not overridden.
  3. 3.From the console or a command block, refer to doors by their doorUID. Door names do not work there.

Limits and conflicts

Large doors are taxing on players' machines, since each block is an entity. Anti-lag plugins tend to remove those entities, so blocks vanish briefly and reappear at their open position. Whitelist FallingBlock entities named BigDoorsEntity to prevent it.

Two add-ons extend it. Big Doors Opener by Eldoria opens doors on conditions such as player proximity, permissions or time of day. Big Doors Physics by bonn2 adds collisions to the animated blocks.

Questions about BigDoors.

4 questions

How do I install BigDoors?

Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of a Folia, Paper, Purpur or Spigot server and restart it. Players need nothing extra. If you already run a resource pack, set resourcePackEnabled to false in the config so the optional sound pack does not override yours.

Does BigDoors work on Folia?

Yes. Folia has its own builds of BigDoors, alongside Paper, Purpur and Spigot. The newest release covers Minecraft 1.11 to 26.3 on each of them and needs no dependencies, so no extra library has to be installed first.

Can I control BigDoors doors from the console or a command block?

Yes, but not by name. Door names do not work from the console or command blocks. You have to use the door's doorUID in the command instead.

Does BigDoors work with Geyser or ViaRewind?

No. Running Geyser or ViaRewind alongside BigDoors is unsupported. The plugin also refuses to start on CatServer, Mohist, Magma, Glowstone and Akarin unless unsafe mode is enabled, which is not supported either.
