Strings is a chat plugin for Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot servers, written by Pedestria. It replaces plain chat with a channel system, per-channel formatting, mentions and emojis. It runs on the server only, and players join with an ordinary setup.
Server software and versions
- Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot: Minecraft 1.16 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What Strings changes
Channels are the core. Besides standard channels, Strings offers world-specific channels and proximity-based channels, each with its own settings and permissions. Every channel can be formatted with MiniMessage, and group formatting is supported. MiniMessage also allows player heads inside chat lines.
- Mentions can play a sound, show an action bar message and colour the mention differently for the person mentioned.
- The /emoji command and Discord-style codes such as  add emojis. Players can apply a resource pack like Pixel Twemoji 18x for better textures.
- Manual broadcasts are improved, and scheduled broadcasts can run automatically.
- Optional message deletion adds a button beside each message.
- Join and leave messages can be customized or switched off.
Installation and configuration
Strings has no required dependencies. Put the file in the plugins folder and restart, as covered in how to install plugins on a server. Channel customization and formatting live in channels.yml, and main settings are in config.yml.
It works with Vault, DiscordSRV, LuckPerms and PlaceholderAPI out of the box, so prefixes and suffixes from a permissions plugin can show in chat.
Commands and permissions
Players get /channel (with join, leave, mute and unmute), /msg, /r, /ignore, /unignore, /helpop and /chatcolor. Broadcasting is gated by strings.chat.broadcast, and /socialspy by strings.socialspy. Access is controlled by nodes such as strings.chat.colormsg, strings.chat.clear and strings.channels followed by a channel name, with strings.* granting everything.
Questions about Strings - Chat Plugin.
4 questions
How do I install Strings?
Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of a Bukkit, Paper, Purpur or Spigot server and restart. Strings has no required dependencies. Afterwards, edit channels.yml for channels and formatting, and config.yml for the main settings.
Does Strings need LuckPerms?
No. LuckPerms, Vault, PlaceholderAPI and DiscordSRV are supported but optional. LuckPerms or any Vault-compatible plugin is only needed if you want prefixes and suffixes to appear in chat.
Do players need to install anything to use Strings?
No. Strings is server-side only, so players join with a normal setup. Emojis look better if players apply a resource pack such as Pixel Twemoji 18x, but that is optional.
Does Strings include word and link filtering?
Not in the main plugin. Word filtering, link filtering, chat cooldowns and additional logging come from the free StringsModeration expansion.
