Better Dogs is a realistic 16x resource pack for Minecraft Java by mrblueyeti. It swaps the tamed wolf for 41 dog breeds with more than 130 textures.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.8.9 to 26.1.2.
What changes visually
Tamed wolves are the ones updated. The pack adds 41 breeds, the golden retriever among them. Separate lighter variants for OptiFine only are offered on the same page and cost less FPS than the full pack.
How to install Better Dogs
- 1.Install OptiFine, or the EMF and ETF pair, and the other mods your chosen route lists.
- 2.Download the zip from CurseForge and place it in the resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder).
- 3.Move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
- 4.Tame a wolf, or name a tamed wolf with a supported breed name, then press F3 + T so the breed appears.
Breed name tags are matched through the wolf_tame.properties file inside the pack, so you can add your own names there. Other players will not see your custom names unless they edit the file the same way. The install guide covers the general steps.
Known limitations
- Fabric setups show some very minor bugs on certain dog models.
- Xaero's Minimap makes dog heads float. JourneyMap is the friendlier alternative.
- Revamped Wolf and Doggy Talents make models look like strings. A Better Dogs and Doggy Talents Next add-on exists for the latter.
- Java only. Bedrock uses a different format and this pack does not cover it.
Questions about Better Dogs.
4 questions
Does Better Dogs need OptiFine?
Not strictly. The pack requires one of three setups: OptiFine on Forge, Entity Model Features with Entity Texture Features on Forge or Fabric, or CEM with Puzzle on Fabric. Separate lighter variants for OptiFine only are listed on the same page and cost less FPS than the full pack.
Why do my dogs still look like wolves?
Press F3 + T after taming a wolf or giving a tamed wolf a supported name tag. The creator lists this as a workaround for a known bug that stops breeds appearing until resources reload.
Is Better Dogs available for Bedrock?
No. Better Dogs is a Java Edition pack, and Bedrock uses a different resource format, so the files cannot be loaded there. Java players install it through the resourcepacks folder and need OptiFine, Entity Model Features with Entity Texture Features, or CEM with Puzzle for the dog models to appear.
Does Better Dogs work with Fabric and Sodium?
Yes. On 1.20.1 to 1.19.3 the EMF route needs Entity Model Features, Entity Texture Features and Fabric API. On 1.19.2 and below the CEM route needs Custom Entity Models, Cloth Config API, CompleteConfig, Entity Texture Features, Mod Menu, Puzzle and Fabric API. Expect some very minor model bugs, and Sodium is optional for extra FPS.
