Bad WiFi

A cursed post-processing shader that makes the screen look like a failing video stream, with broken blocks, color splitting and ghosting. It runs on Iris and OptiFine.

Bad WiFi is a cursed, vanilla-like shader pack for Minecraft Java that fakes the look of a failing video stream. As a bad wifi shader it works on Iris and OptiFine, and it is a post-processing effect rather than a lighting overhaul. It loads on the player's own machine only.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.7.3 to 26.3.

Effects

The pack is aimed at machinimas, horror maps and stylized footage. It is built for creators who want digital corruption without external video editing.

  • Packet loss, where the frame breaks into fragmented blocks like an interrupted transmission.
  • Macroblocking and compression artifacts, with large corrupted regions that mimic a low-bitrate video.
  • RGB signal corruption, a subtle color channel split and chromatic offset.
  • Ghosting, where previous frames linger for a moment and mimic streaming desync.
  • Dynamic glitch patterns that keep moving, so the distortion never settles into a loop.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Iris or OptiFine for your Minecraft Java setup. The shader install guide covers both.
  2. 2.Download the pack from Modrinth and place the .zip in the shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select Bad WiFi.

The pack needs no extra mods or libraries on either loader. If the pack does not appear or the screen stays normal, the shader troubleshooting guide is the next stop.

Performance and trade-offs

The creator describes the implementation as light on the GPU, and Modrinth tags it low and potato. That is a design claim, not a measured result, so expect it to vary by machine.

Questions about Bad WiFi.

3 questions

Does Bad WiFi fix my real internet or lag?

No. Bad WiFi is a visual shader that imitates packet loss, compression blocks and color splitting on screen. It changes how the picture looks and has no effect on your actual connection, ping or network speed.

Does Bad WiFi work with Iris and OptiFine?

Yes. The pack lists both Iris and OptiFine as loaders, with builds covering Minecraft 1.7.3 to 26.3. It is for Java only, because Bedrock cannot run either loader.

Is Bad WiFi good for low-end PCs?

The creator says it is built to produce convincing corruption without excessive GPU overhead, and Modrinth tags it low and potato. Those are the creator's claims rather than benchmarks, so results depend on your hardware.
