CTR VCR is a retro shader pack that dresses the world in the artifacts of old CRT monitors and VHS tapes. It runs on Iris and OptiFine for Java and works on the player's own machine only. The look stays vanilla-like and stylized rather than realistic, with a deliberately glitchy edge.
Shader loaders and versions
- Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.12.1 to 26.3.
What the effects look like
The effects are subtle by design. They are tuned so the distortion never swamps the world, which keeps ordinary play comfortable. The effects were originally a GLSL shader written for Unity in 2023, later ported to Minecraft shaders.
- Static noise across the whole picture
- Light distortions
- Chromatic aberration at colour edges
- Scan-lines for the monitor feel
- Bloom, listed among its Modrinth tags
How to install CTR VCR
- 1.Install Iris (on Fabric or NeoForge) or OptiFine. The shader install guide covers both.
- 2.Place the pack's .zip file in the shaderpacks folder.
- 3.Open the shader menu (Video Settings > Shader Packs in Iris) and select CTR VCR.
Performance and trade-offs
Modrinth tags the pack as potato and low impact, so it suits modest hardware better than a full lighting overhaul. The trade-off is the style itself. Grain and noise are the whole point, and some people will find them tiring over long sessions.

Questions about CTR VCR.
4 questions
Does CTR VCR work with Iris and OptiFine?
Yes. Both loaders have releases for it, and the newest release lists no required dependencies. Iris runs on Fabric or NeoForge, while OptiFine works on its own. Pick whichever loader you already use, drop the .zip into the shaderpacks folder, and select it in the shader menu.
How do I install CTR VCR?
Install Iris or OptiFine first. Then put the pack's .zip file into the shaderpacks folder and start Java. Open the shader menu, which is Video Settings > Shader Packs in Iris, and choose CTR VCR. The pack needs no extra libraries according to its newest release.
Is CTR VCR good for low-end PCs?
Modrinth tags it as potato and low impact, which positions it as a light pack. That is an editorial label, not a hardware promise, so actual frame rates still depend on your machine, your loader and any other mods you run alongside it.
Does CTR VCR work on Bedrock?
No. CTR VCR is a Java shader pack that needs Iris or OptiFine, and neither loader runs on Bedrock. Modrinth hosts Java content, and Bedrock uses a different format, so this pack is not an option there. Bedrock players will need to look for a different shader.
