Cursed Fog is a horror-themed shader pack for Minecraft Java on the Iris and OptiFine pipelines. It layers a CRT screen mask, video artifacts, and noise over the world to build a tense, eerie atmosphere, and every effect toggles independently so the intensity can be dialed up or down. LoLip_p's August 2026 release, version 1.0.9, reaches Minecraft 26.2 on both loaders.

Installing Cursed Fog with Iris or OptiFine

  1. 1.Install Iris or OptiFine for your Minecraft Java version.
  2. 2.Download the Cursed Fog zip file from its Modrinth page.
  3. 3.Open the shaderpacks folder from the in-game Video Settings menu, or find it inside your .minecraft folder.
  4. 4.Move the downloaded zip into the shaderpacks folder without extracting it.
  5. 5.Open Options, then Video Settings, then Shaders, and select Cursed Fog from the list.

The steps match any other Iris or OptiFine pack. Our shader install guide covers both loaders in more detail if this is your first shader pack.

What Cursed Fog changes

The pack does not aim for realism. It processes the whole screen like a damaged recording: a CRT mask, scan-line style video artifacts, and a noise overlay sit on top of vanilla lighting, and the fog itself reads heavier and more oppressive than the vanilla default. LoLip_p built it as a base layer for horror modpacks rather than a standalone visual overhaul, and every parameter behind these effects is exposed so a pack author or player can turn individual pieces off.

  • A CRT screen mask over the full frame.
  • Video artifact and glitch effects.
  • A noise and grain overlay.
  • Heavier, more oppressive fog than vanilla.
  • Fully customizable toggles for every effect.

Which Minecraft versions Cursed Fog supports

Every Cursed Fog release ships as a single build that lists both Iris and OptiFine together, rather than splitting the two pipelines into separate files with different version ceilings. The current release, 1.0.9 from August 24, 2026, declares support from 1.8.9 through 26.2, Minecraft's current year.drop version, on both loaders at once. There is no separate Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge build, since shader packs load through the shader pipeline instead of a mod loader.

Cursed Fog and other horror-leaning shaders

Cursed Fog is not the only shader chasing a tense, watched feeling. Insanity Shader goes for a similar hazy, oppressive look but has not shipped a build since mid-2024 and caps out well below 26.2, while Cursed Fog keeps pace with Minecraft's current version. LoLip_p also publishes Body Camera Shader and MC VHS, two other Iris and OptiFine packs built around a damaged-recording look rather than realistic lighting.

Questions about Cursed Fog.

5 questions

Does Cursed Fog work with Iris and OptiFine?

Yes. LoLip_p ships one build per release covering both loaders at once, and the August 2026 release, version 1.0.9, reaches Minecraft 26.2 on Iris and OptiFine alike. There is no Fabric or Forge version, since shader packs load through the shader pipeline rather than a mod loader.

Which Minecraft versions does Cursed Fog support?

The 1.0.9 release from August 24, 2026 declares support from 1.8.9 all the way through 26.2, spanning both the old numbering and the year.drop scheme Mojang introduced in 2026. One build covers that entire range on both Iris and OptiFine.

Is Cursed Fog good for horror modpacks?

That is what LoLip_p built it for. The creator describes it as a base layer for a tense, eerie atmosphere in horror modpacks, with a CRT mask, video artifacts, and noise that every parameter can toggle independently, so a pack author can dial the intensity to fit their own project.

Do I need any other mods for Cursed Fog to work?

No required dependencies beyond a shader loader. Cursed Fog needs Iris or OptiFine installed first, the same as any other shader pack, and lists nothing else as a requirement on its Modrinth page.

Does Cursed Fog affect performance on lower-end PCs?

There is no single confirmed answer. Modrinth files the project under every performance tier at once, from potato to high, rather than one specific rating, so treat any FPS claim as unverified and test the pack on your own hardware before relying on it.
