Liminal Shader [LOST] is a vintage horror shader pack for Java, made for Iris and OptiFine. It uses film grain, soft focus and a heavy vignette to make a scene look like an aged photograph. The target is horror maps, liminal space settings and atmospheric survival, and the pack runs on the player's own install only.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.17 to 26.2.

Look and effects

The pack takes its cues from classic silent films and aged photographs. Grain is subtle, focus is soft, and the vignette is dramatic enough to pull the eye toward the middle of the frame.

  • Haunting landscapes and desolate cities
  • Liminal environments for screenshots and horror maps
  • Atmospheric let's plays and silent horror shorts, with the mood already in the image

Performance and trade-offs

Everything rests on post-processing rather than heavy calculations such as path tracing. The creator describes smooth running on older hardware with minimal FPS impact, and Modrinth tags it low and medium. For a similar unsettling mood with a different treatment, look at Cursed Fog.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Iris (on Fabric or NeoForge) or OptiFine. The shader install guide covers both.
  2. 2.Place the pack's .zip file in the shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Select it in the shader menu. For Iris, that is Video Settings > Shader Packs.

Iris and OptiFine are Java mods, so Bedrock cannot run this pack. If it does not appear in the list, this troubleshooting guide covers the usual causes.

Questions about Liminal Shader [LOST].

4 questions

How do I install Liminal Shader?

Install Iris or OptiFine first, then put the pack's .zip file into the shaderpacks folder. Open the shader menu (Video Settings > Shader Packs in Iris) and select it. The pack needs no other mod, since its listed builds require nothing beyond the loader.

Does Liminal Shader work on Bedrock?

No. It is a Java pack for Iris and OptiFine, and neither loader runs on Bedrock. Bedrock uses a different format for shaders, so this pack's builds cannot be used there. Players on Bedrock need a pack made specifically for that format.

Is Liminal Shader good for low-end PCs?

The creator says it runs smoothly on older hardware with minimal FPS impact, because it relies on post-processing effects instead of path tracing. Modrinth tags it low and medium for performance. Results still depend on your own hardware and settings.

Which Java releases does Liminal Shader support?

The single 1.0 release covers 1.17 to 26.2 on both Iris and OptiFine. It was published on 2026-07-28 and has not been updated since.
