LiDAR Visualizer

A shader that turns crouching into a LiDAR scan. Rays leave persistent points in the world, so you can map an area dot by dot.

LiDAR Visualizer is a fantasy and cartoon shader pack for Java that imitates LiDAR scan software. It runs on Iris and sits in the medium performance tier. It works only on the player's own machine, so it is a purely local effect.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.3.

How the scan works

Crouching fires hundreds of rays every frame in a circular pattern from the crosshair. A point appears wherever a ray lands. Those points persist, so sweeping your aim across terrain slowly maps the area, much like a handheld scanner would.

  • Points stay in place after they are created, building up a map.
  • The pack holds at most 2,048,000 points at once, and the oldest point is replaced when the limit is reached.
  • Reloading the shader erases every point.

Installing the pack

You need Iris on Java. If you have not set up shaders before, the shader install guide covers the loader side.

  1. 1.Put the pack's .zip file in your shaderpacks folder.
  2. 2.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs.
  3. 3.Select LiDAR Visualizer and apply it.
  4. 4.Crouch and aim at the terrain to begin scanning.

Trade-offs

This is a niche effect rather than an everyday lighting pack. It is built around one mechanic, scanning by crouching, and it needs Iris, so Bedrock players cannot use it. If it fails to load, the shader troubleshooting guide is the place to start.

Questions about LiDAR Visualizer.

3 questions

How do I install LiDAR Visualizer?

Install Iris, place the pack's .zip file in your shaderpacks folder, then open Video Settings and choose Shader Packs. Select LiDAR Visualizer from the list and apply it. Once it is active, crouch while aiming at terrain to start placing scan points in the world.

How do I clear the points in LiDAR Visualizer?

Reload the shader. Doing so erases every point that has been scanned so far. Otherwise the points stay in place, up to a limit of 2,048,000, and once that limit is reached the oldest point is replaced by each new one.

Does LiDAR Visualizer work on Bedrock?

No. It is a Java shader pack that runs through Iris, and Iris is a Java mod that Bedrock cannot run. Bedrock players would need a different kind of pack made in that platform's own format.
