Realistic Dark

A night-focused shader pack that imitates how eyes lose colour and sharpness in low light, instead of simply lowering brightness. Built for Iris, with a low performance tier listed.

Realistic Dark is a semi-realistic, fantasy-leaning shader pack for Java by dairycultist. It tries to recreate how human eyes handle darkness rather than just turning the brightness down. It runs through Iris, or Oculus on Forge, works on the player's machine only, and is listed in the low performance tier.

Shader loaders and versions

How the darkness works

The pack changes three things as light fades.

  • Colour drains away. Saturation is lost completely in the dark.
  • Detail softens. What you see turns blurrier and noisier, and both are adjustable in the shader settings.
  • The floor is not pure black. The darkest tone defaults to eigengrau, and that is configurable too.

Installing the pack

  1. 1.Install Iris Shaders on Fabric, or Oculus on Forge. The pack does not work without one of them.
  2. 2.Put the pack's .zip file in your shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select Realistic Dark.

Trade-offs

This is a mood pack. Loss of colour, blur and noise in the dark are the point of the design, and the blur and noise amounts can be changed in the shader settings.

Questions about Realistic Dark.

3 questions

How do I install Realistic Dark?

Install Iris on Fabric, or Oculus on Forge, then place the pack's .zip file in the shaderpacks folder. Open Video Settings, choose Shader Packs, and select Realistic Dark. Without one of those loaders the pack will not run.

Does Realistic Dark just make everything darker?

No. It imitates human night vision. Colour disappears in low light, the image gets blurrier and noisier, and the darkest tone is eigengrau instead of true black. The noise and blur can be adjusted in the shader settings.

Is Realistic Dark light on performance?

Modrinth lists it in the low performance tier. That is a filter label, not a hardware promise, so actual frame rates depend on your PC, your loader and any other mods you run.
