Soft Memory

A nostalgia-driven shader pack that trades realism for warm, saturated colour or a worn VHS look. It was tuned to run on integrated graphics.

Soft Memory is a semi-realistic, fantasy-leaning shader pack for Java that aims to recreate childhood nostalgia. It runs on Iris and OptiFine and is a soft-focus, colour-graded take on the vanilla look rather than a photoreal one. It is a client-side pack; a server cannot run it.

IslandAggravating edited it from Mellow Shader by The CMK, and wrote it with integrated Intel graphics as the performance floor.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.16 to 26.2.

Looks and effects

Two modes define the identity. Childhood Summer peaks at sunrise and sunset, with saturated colours, bloom, uneven grain and a touch of colour channel splitting. VHS mode goes the other way: desaturated, lower contrast, with the classic tape artifacts.

  • Memorify, a customisable blur over the final image for a memory-like haze. It can be turned off.
  • Fog that follows the loaded sky colour, with timing fixed so sunset tones no longer appear in daylight.
  • Repaired fancy clouds, plus a 2016-style cloud look.
  • Shadows, reflections, godrays, bloom, a realistic moon, shooting stars and an end ambience.
  • PBR and specular support.

Presets and performance

  • Fast: the most cut-down preset, for simple effects and maximum FPS.
  • Fancy: a balance of quality and speed, suggested for high-FPS play.
  • Fabulous: every effect at reasonable quality, suggested for normal play.
  • Ultra: the same effects as Fabulous at maximum quality, meant for screenshots and renders.

The pack is listed as working on Intel, Nvidia and Apple Silicon (from its 1.16 update) graphics. AMD and Intel discrete cards are untested but may work. Problems are reported to the creator on Patreon.

Installation

Put the .zip in your shaderpacks folder, then pick it in the shader menu (Video Settings > Shader Packs for Iris). The install guide covers both loaders, and the shader troubleshooting guide helps if the pack will not load. Bedrock cannot run it.

Questions about Soft Memory.

4 questions

How do I install Soft Memory?

Install Iris or OptiFine, place the pack's .zip in the shaderpacks folder, then open Video Settings and choose it under Shader Packs. Neither loader needs an extra dependency for this pack. Pick a preset in the shader settings afterwards.

Does Soft Memory work with Iris and OptiFine?

Yes. Both loaders have builds for it, and neither build requires any other mod. It is a Java pack only, because Bedrock cannot run Iris or OptiFine.

Is Soft Memory good for low-end PCs?

It was edited and tested on an Intel integrated GPU, and Modrinth tags it potato, low and medium. The Fast and Fancy presets are the light ones. Ultra is heavy and meant for screenshots.

Does Soft Memory work on Apple Silicon?

Yes, from its 1.16 update onward. The creator also lists Intel integrated GPUs and Nvidia cards as compatible, with AMD and Intel discrete cards untested.
