Velocity shaders are a realistic shader pack for Java, running on Iris or OptiFine. It is a faster fork of Mellow Shaders, tuned to keep frame rates high without flattening the image. It is a visual pack for your own machine and is unsupported on dedicated hosts.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.0 to 26.3.

What it changes

Velocity is tagged for reflections, shadows, atmosphere and foliage. Its settings include water reflections, dynamic shadows and lighting, sun rays and bloom. The pack was originally going to be called Mellow: Reimagined. It carries the name Velocity at the original author's request, so some internal files still use the old name.

Performance and settings

The pack is listed across potato, medium and high tiers, with a Potato profile for weak hardware. The creator tested on an RTX 3080 with slow DDR4 memory and says memory held the pack back. A DDR5 system, in the creator's estimate, should do much better. Treat that as one person's testing, not a promise for your machine.

Installing and pairing

  1. 1.Install Iris or OptiFine. The pack lists no other requirements.
  2. 2.Put the pack's .zip in your shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select Velocity. The full steps are in our shader install guide.

The creator suggests pairing it with an optimisation modpack. Fabulously Optimized is the popular choice, and Remarkably Optimized is the one used during development.

Questions about Velocity.

4 questions

Is Velocity a fork of Mellow Shaders?

Yes. Velocity is a higher-performance fork of Mellow Shaders. It was renamed from Mellow: Reimagined at the original author's request, so a few internal files may still carry the older name. It is a separate pack from Mellow.

Can Velocity run on integrated graphics?

The creator says it can. Set the profile to Potato, disable water reflections and dynamic shadows and lighting, and for extra safety turn off sun rays and bloom. Results depend on your hardware, so adjust from there.

Does Velocity work with Iris and OptiFine?

Yes. Velocity lists builds for both Iris and OptiFine, and neither needs an extra dependency. Install your loader, place the .zip in the shaderpacks folder, then select the pack in the shader menu.

Can I use Velocity on Bedrock?

No. Velocity is a Java pack that needs Iris or OptiFine, and both are Java mods that Bedrock cannot run. Bedrock players need a different kind of graphics pack.
