xHarderCore Hydration is a Bedrock addon from TryAgain that adds a thirst bar to survival. It is a stable pack, so no experimental toggles are needed, and it works on Bedrock only. The latest file is xHydration-[v1.9.5].mcaddon, and it is one part of the wider xHarderCore series.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 1.21.70 to 26.20.

How thirst works

The thirst bar behaves like the vanilla hunger bar, with one difference. Healing does not need a full bar, so thirst does not hold back regeneration. Healing does make you dehydrate, though.

  • Drink any potion. Good potions hydrate you and harmful ones make you thirstier.
  • Sneak outside the water and hit the block beneath it with an empty hand to drink from natural sources.
  • Milk and honey bottles restore hydration. From v1.3, apples, sweet berries, glow berries, beetroot soup, mushroom stew and rabbit stew restore some too.

Purifying water

Early on (v1.9 and later), craft an Empty Metallic Mug and use it on a water block to fill it with dirty water. Smelt the mug in a normal furnace to purify it.

For larger batches, craft a Metallic Pot and combine it with iron to make a Purifying Pot. Set it on a lit campfire and fill it with water bottles or a water bucket. It holds up to 6 bottles and needs around 45 seconds. Remove existing purified water before adding more, or the batch turns dirty again. The Metallic Pot can also be worn as armor and never breaks.

Later, the Water Filter and Advanced Water Filter let you drink straight from a water source by holding the interact button while looking at it. The Water Filter still carries a 34% chance of Hunger and about 7% chance of poison, and lasts about 31 uses. The Advanced Water Filter cuts those to 17% and about 4%, and lasts about 70 uses.

Installation

Open the .mcaddon file with Minecraft Bedrock to import it, then switch on its behavior and resource packs in your world settings. The addon does not use Player.json and does not turn off achievements. The creator's page states that from v1.5 the addon needs xCore to function, so check that your files include it. Steps for importing are in how to install add-ons on Minecraft Bedrock, and fixing add-ons that do not work covers a pack that fails to load.

Questions about xHarderCore - Hydration.

4 questions

Does xHarderCore Hydration need experimental toggles?

No. The creator describes the addon as stable, so you can import it and enable its packs without switching on any Experiments in the world settings. It also leaves your achievements active, so worlds using it can still earn them.

How do I make purified water in xHarderCore Hydration?

Early on, craft an Empty Metallic Mug, fill it from a water block and smelt it in a furnace. Later, craft a Metallic Pot, combine it with iron into a Purifying Pot, place it over a lit campfire and fill it with water. It takes around 45 seconds.

Does thirst stop health regeneration in this addon?

No. The thirst bar works like the vanilla hunger bar, but healing does not need it to be full, so thirst does not directly affect regeneration. The reverse is true, though. Healing makes you dehydrate, so recovering from damage drains your hydration.

Is xHarderCore Hydration for Java Edition?

No. It is a Bedrock Edition addon distributed as a .mcaddon file, and Java Edition cannot load that format. Import the file with Minecraft Bedrock on Windows, phones or tablets, then enable the packs per world.
