The most downloaded Minecraft texture packs we list for Java are Fresh Animations (48,250,135 Modrinth downloads, read 2 October 2026), Motschen's Better Leaves and Low On Fire. Few of them are full retextures. Faithful 64x and Bare Bones are the broad looks here, while most of the others change one thing, such as mob animation, leaves, fire or the sky, and a few need OptiFine features or a mod to work.
How we picked these texture packs
We chose from the 70 Java resource pack pages we list. Of those, 69 carry a Modrinth download count, and the 12 with the highest counts, read on 2 October 2026, are here in that order. One page comes from another source, has no count and is not ranked. Resolution and style come from each pack's Modrinth tags and its own description. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

The 12 most downloaded Java resource packs
Fresh Animations
Fresh Animations
@FreshLX · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it for animated mobs. Its page lists creatures from villagers and creepers to bats and the Happy Ghast, and Modrinth tags it 16x, entities, models and realistic. It is not a plain texture swap. It needs OptiFine's Custom Entity Models, or Entity Model Features with Entity Texture Features as the alternative. The trade-off is conflicts: its page says packs with their own entity models override its animations, and the creator does not plan a Bedrock port.
Motschen's Better Leaves
Motschen's Better Leaves
@Motschen · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it if you want fuller, rounder leaves and nothing else changed. Its Modrinth summary claims high mod compatibility and performance, and the linked repository carries an MIT licence file. Release 9 generates the leaf textures ahead of time for speed, but unlike 8.1 it is not dynamic, so pairing it with a pack that has custom leaves means following the creator's compile steps. The creator suggests Cull Leaves alongside Sodium or Embeddium for more FPS.
Low On Fire
Low On Fire
@Haikis · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it if the burning overlay blocks your view. Its page says flames cover only a small fraction of the screen while fire on the ground stays unchanged, and it states that OptiFine is not needed. Modrinth tags it 16x, combat, utility and vanilla-like. The limit is reuse: Modrinth lists it as All Rights Reserved and it links no source code, so treat it as a pack to use, not one to fold into your own.
Fresh Moves
Fresh Moves
@IthanMendoza · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for player animation, with idle, walking and swimming movement overhauled. It needs recent releases of Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features, which its page says work on both Forge and Fabric, and it says OptiFine cannot do custom player models. The newest listed release is a beta from 2025-01-20, so it is the least recently updated pack here. Animated eyes also mean adding extra pixels to your skin file, as its wiki describes.
Fast Better Grass
Fast Better Grass
@robotkoer · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for grass blocks that show their top texture on the sides, with no mod installed. It adjusts block models only and ships no textures, and its page says it works with other resource packs. It imitates OptiFine's fast Better Grass mode. The limit is that fancy mode is not imitated, and backports to older releases are not planned.
Fullbright UB
Fullbright UB
@worldresourcepack · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for constant full brightness, including caves and at night, per its page, which says it works in vanilla, OptiFine and Sodium. Its creator frames it as a way to see clearly without mods or shaders. The catch is Sodium: its page says Sodium on 1.21.6 needs a small extra mod such as Polytone. Modrinth tags it core-shaders, simplistic and utility, and lists it as All Rights Reserved with a support wiki instead of source code.
Fresh Animations Extensions
Fresh Animations: Extensions
@FreshLX · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it only if you already run Fresh Animations. It bundles the creator's extension packs, including creeper and spider edits, extra model details, emissive textures, classic horses and animated chests, boats and minecarts. Its page says to load it above Fresh Animations and that it suits the vanilla look and is unfriendly to other packs. Modrinth lists it as All Rights Reserved, and its terms bar redistribution and Bedrock ports.
Dramatic Skys
Dramatic Skys
@thebaum64 · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for new skies. Its page describes day, sunset and night skies for each biome, plus auroras, shooting stars and meteor showers, and says it works over any other pack. The trade-off is a mod. Its page says you need something that enables custom skyboxes, naming Skyboxify, OptiFine, Nuit or Celestial, and some Modrinth releases also list Fabric API. The page also calls the pack performance friendly.
Bare Bones
Bare Bones
@RobotPants · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for a simple, vibrant 16x look. Its summary promises the style of the trailers, and Modrinth tags it simplistic and vanilla-like, with blocks, entities, GUI and items covered. It needs no mod. The limit is the terms: according to its page you may alter it only if the result is not distributed, reuploads are barred, and commercial use means contacting the creator. Its newest listed release dates from 2025-12-20.
Default Dark Mode
Default Dark Mode
@nebulr · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for a darker interface with the vanilla textures otherwise intact. Its page lists support for a long run of mods, among them JEI, EMI and Sophisticated Backpacks, and says OptiFine is needed only for the dark loading screen. Source is on GitHub. The licence file is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, so reuse must be non-commercial and share-alike.
Low Fire
Low Fire
@Oculie · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it if you want fire lowered in first person and the floor flames left alone. Its page says the fire sits 6 pixels (37.5%) lower than vanilla and that only the entity fire model changes. Modrinth tags it 16x, combat and utility. The licence is All Rights Reserved, though its page allows use in modpacks or other packs with credit and bars selling it. Fire, crosshair and sword packs get a closer look in our PvP texture pack roundup.
Faithful 64x
Faithful 64x
@HARYA301 · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for a plain resolution step up from the default look. Its page describes quadruple-resolution art based on the default textures and its 32x counterparts, and Modrinth tags it 64x and vanilla-like. It needs nothing else. The limit is the licence: the repository carries a custom Faithful License, and the page sends commercial and distribution questions there. It also warns that downloads from other sites are unofficial, unsupported and could be dangerous.
Which packs need OptiFine or a mod
Most of the twelve load on their own. These are the exceptions, as their pages and Modrinth dependency lists state them. Placing the file and switching the pack on is covered in How to Install Minecraft Resource Packs on Java and Bedrock.
- Needs OptiFine features or a mod pair: Fresh Animations (OptiFine Custom Entity Models, or Entity Model Features with Entity Texture Features) and Fresh Moves (those two mods only, since its page says OptiFine does not support player custom models).
- Needs another pack: Fresh Animations Extensions requires Fresh Animations and loads above it.
- Needs a skybox mod: Dramatic Skys, through Skyboxify, OptiFine, Nuit or Celestial.
- Optional extras: Cull Leaves for Better Leaves, OptiFine for the dark loading screen in Default Dark Mode, and a mod such as Polytone for Fullbright UB with Sodium.
- No required add-on listed: Low On Fire, Fast Better Grass, Bare Bones, Low Fire and Faithful 64x.
How to choose between them
Start with what you want changed. For a whole new look, the broad choices here are Bare Bones and Faithful 64x, and the deciding fact is resolution: 16x against 64x. For one targeted change, match the pack to the job, and check the needs list above first, because Fresh Animations, Fresh Moves and Dramatic Skys are the three that depend on something outside the pack.
Everything we left out, from Faithful 32x to Dokucraft, which has no Modrinth count, sits in every resource pack we list, and vanilla-style resource packs is a narrower cut.
