Which consoles need a subscription for Minecraft online play

PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch each tie Minecraft online play to a paid console plan. This page sets out the plans, the prices read, and which multiplayer modes the sources cover.

Yes. Minecraft's accounts page says you still need a paid subscription to play online on consoles: Xbox Live Gold on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. Xbox's own page lists online console multiplayer in Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate.

What each console requires

We read these three pages on 19 October 2026. We did not buy a plan or connect a console. Nintendo's Expansion Pack tier ($49.99 USD a year individual) adds classic games on top of the base membership, and the page does not make it a requirement for online play.

Which kinds of multiplayer need a subscription

Minecraft's accounts page ties the plan to playing online as a whole. It does not rule on each mode, so the list below says what each source states and what we are reading into it.

  • Realms. The Realms page says multiplayer functionality on consoles requires platform-specific online subscriptions, sold separately. Realms for Bedrock costs $3.99 USD a month (you plus 2 players) and Realms Plus $7.99 USD a month (you plus 10), read 19 October 2026. On a console that is two bills.
  • Friends' worlds. Minecraft's server guide (published 5 June 2023) describes inviting gamertag friends from the Invite to Game button. It lists no subscription rule for this, but it is online play.
  • Featured servers. The same guide says the Bedrock Servers tab lists featured servers. It states no separate rule, and they are online play as well.
  • Split screen. Minecraft has a help page on split-screen requirements, but the text we read held no requirements. We make no claim either way.

Who pays for a Realm

People you invite do not need a Realms subscription, and the Realms page says they play for free. A console player joining a friend's Realm still falls under the console footnote above. Realms for Java costs $7.99 USD a month, and its cross-play is listed for Windows, Mac and Linux only, so no console plan comes into it. Realms joins players within one game type only, which our cross-play explainer expands on.

What you can play without paying

Nintendo's 7-day trial turns into a 1-month auto-renewing membership unless you switch renewal off before it ends. PlayStation ran a free online multiplayer weekend on July 3 to 5 with no PlayStation Plus required, a dated promotion that had passed by our read date. Realms also offers a 30-day trial to new Bedrock and Java subscribers.

Which account you need besides the subscription

Minecraft's guide says you must be signed in with a Microsoft account to play multiplayer. That account is free, and on PlayStation and Switch you sign in with it while the console plan pays for online access. Our Microsoft account explainer covers what it links. For Realms on a child or teen profile, the Clubs and Multiplayer settings must both be set to Allowed, and under 13s need a parent to finish setup. See what parental controls cover.

What this means if you use add-ons or a server

Console Realms run on Bedrock Edition, while Realms for Java belongs to Windows, Mac and Linux, so the split in Java vs Bedrock decides which plan you ever pay for. Console players who want extra content should read the console add-ons guide. To reach a Java server from Bedrock, see what Geyser is. The sources we read do not say whether joining such a server changes the subscription rule. The steps for inviting friends are in how to play with friends.

What the sources do not say

No price for PlayStation Plus or the Game Pass plans appeared in the text we read, and plans vary by region. The split-screen rules are unconfirmed, and no source ranks featured servers or friend invites separately. Check your platform's store before paying.
