To change the Minecraft version of a modpack or profile in the CurseForge app, right click it, choose Clone as..., pick a different Minecraft version and click Create. CurseForge ties each profile to one Minecraft version, so a clone is the app's route to a different one.
How a profile's Minecraft version is tied
CurseForge ties every mod and every profile to one Minecraft version. If a mod and a profile do not match, the mod cannot be added to that profile.
The Change Version button in My Modpacks is a different feature. It switches between files the modpack author uploaded, and CurseForge states it is not related to the Minecraft version of the modpack. To see which version a profile uses, click the profile and look for the number next to the controller icon.
Change the version with Clone as
- 1.Right click the modpack or profile and click `Clone as...`.
- 2.Select the Minecraft version you want, or keep the current one.
- 3.Click `Create`.
Cloning is similar to the old Duplicate feature, with the added ability to set a different Minecraft version for the new modpack. If the app will not start it, see fix CurseForge not launching Minecraft.
What gets carried over and what gets dropped
When the version you pick differs from the original, CurseForge applies three rules.
- Only compatible mods are carried over, and they get their default configurations. Your tuned config files do not follow.
- All worlds from the original are carried over, but compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Compatible locked mods become unlocked in the cloned modpack.
Only compatible mods are copied, so check the mod list in the clone before you launch. For background on how packs are put together, see what a Minecraft modpack is.
Why a changed version may not work
CurseForge says plainly that it cannot guarantee a cloned modpack works correctly after the Minecraft version changes, and that it cannot provide support if problems come from that change. Treat the clone as an experiment.
That is the trade-off of this route. It saves you from rebuilding a mod list by hand, but you accept an unsupported result, default configs and worlds that may not load.
Create a new profile instead
If the clone misbehaves, or the pack was heavily customised and you want a clean result, start a fresh profile at the version you want and add mods yourself.
- 1.Open the Minecraft section in the CurseForge app and click `Create`.
- 2.Name the profile, select a Minecraft version and choose a modloader version. The latest modloader version is pre-selected.
- 3.Go to My Modpacks and click your new profile.
- 4.Click `Add More Content` and install your mods, resource packs or maps.
- 5.Click `Play` when ready.
Pick the game type to match your mods, since a profile supports only mods for its own loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt. Vanilla runs without a modloader and does not support mods. Our guide to installing a modpack from CurseForge or Modrinth covers the wider process.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the Minecraft version of a CurseForge profile without cloning it?
Not in the CurseForge support articles we read. A profile is tied to the Minecraft version it was created with, and the app's route to a different one is Clone as... or a brand new profile. The Change Version button only moves between modpack files the author uploaded and does not alter the Minecraft version.
Will my mods and worlds survive a version change?
Only partly. Every world is carried over, but CurseForge does not guarantee it will work in the new version. Keep a world backup until the clone proves stable.
Does CurseForge support a modpack after I change its version?
No. CurseForge cannot guarantee that a cloned modpack works correctly after the Minecraft version changes, and it cannot provide support for issues caused by that change.
Why is the Change Version option missing on my modpack?
The option appears only when the author has uploaded a file on a different modpack version. If you enabled Allow content management for this profile in the Profile Options, disable it first. Changing versions overwrites your custom content changes unless you choose Update to new Profile.
