Vulkan Optimization

A Fabric performance pack by Fring that swaps OpenGL rendering for Vulkan and keeps the mod list short. It is for players on low-end or competitive setups.

Vulkan Optimization is a lightweight Vulkan optimization modpack for Java, built by Fring for Fabric. It replaces the OpenGL renderer with Vulkan and aims at higher frame rates, fewer micro-stutters and faster chunk rendering. It runs on the player's own install only.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.4 to 26.3.

How the Vulkan switch works

From 26.2 onward the standalone VulkanMod is gone. Sodium now supports Vulkan through Minecraft's native graphics API selection, and the pack is pre-configured to move rendering to Vulkan as soon as it launches. Fring says dropping the old wrapper also removes the crashes and mod conflicts it used to cause.

Older releases lack that native selection, so they still rely on VulkanMod to force the Vulkan engine. Either way, the mod list stays short and focused on system-level performance, with no visual extras.

Benchmark claims

Fring's own table lists 224 FPS for default vanilla, 424 FPS for standard optimization and 813 FPS for this pack, with no micro-stutters in the last two cases. The test ran on an Intel i5 12th gen with an RTX 3050, 16 GB allocated, Windows and a render distance of 12. Treat it as one machine's result, not a promise for yours.

How to install Vulkan Optimization

  1. 1.Open the Modrinth App, or Prism Launcher or another launcher that reads .mrpack files.
  2. 2.Import the pack from its Modrinth page. The launcher fetches the listed mods and Fabric for you.
  3. 3.Pick the release that matches the Java release you want to play, then launch.

The pack lists no required dependencies on its newest release. The trade-off is scope. Dedicated hosting is unsupported, shaders mean leaving Vulkan, and the whole point is raw frame rate rather than new content. It suits low-end PCs and competitive players who want steady frame pacing while keeping vanilla visuals.

Questions about Vulkan Optimization.

4 questions

Do shaders work with Vulkan Optimization?

Iris Shaders does not work while rendering runs on the native Vulkan engine that the pack enables from 26.2 onward. To use shaders on those releases, switch the graphics API option from Vulkan to OpenGL manually. Older releases of the pack use VulkanMod instead.

Does Vulkan Optimization still use VulkanMod?

Not on 26.2 and newer. The standalone VulkanMod was removed because Sodium now supports Vulkan through Minecraft's native graphics API selection, and the pack switches to Vulkan on launch. Older releases lack that selection, so they keep VulkanMod to force the Vulkan engine.

Can I use Vulkan Optimization for multiplayer?

The pack is listed under multiplayer, but it installs only on the player's own machine. Hosting a dedicated world with it is unsupported, so install it on your own launcher profile and join worlds as usual.

How do I install the Vulkan Optimization modpack?

Import it into the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher or another launcher that reads .mrpack files. The launcher fetches the listed mods and the Fabric loader. Choose the release that matches the Java release you want, then start that profile.
