Athena is a cross-platform baked model loader with built-in support for connected textures. The athena mod runs on Fabric and NeoForge, with older Forge releases, and loads on the player's side only. Terrarium maintains it, with ThatGravyBoat as lead developer.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.4 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.19.4 to 1.20.1 need no dependencies.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 26.1.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.19.4 to 1.20.4, builds stopped after March 2024. The newest build needs no dependencies.

How Athena handles connected textures

Each model type gets its own baked model, which keeps performance steady and compatibility broad across platforms. Athena's connected texture method (CTM) is written for those models, so it skips unnecessary calculations and resolves common issues.

Custom checks are supported as well, such as special vertical culling for glass panes. Modrinth lists the mod under the library and decoration categories.

Installing Athena

  1. 1.Set up Fabric or NeoForge for the release you play. The Fabric setup guide covers the first case.
  2. 2.Add any dependency named in the loader list above, such as Fabric API on Fabric.
  3. 3.Place Athena's file in the mods folder of your instance.
  4. 4.Launch with the loader's profile.

Trade-offs

Athena is a loader and library rather than a content mod, so its value depends on the other mods and packs that use it. Forge players are limited to older releases, since Forge builds ended in March 2024. The creator's wiki at wiki.terrarium.earth/athena and the GitHub issue tracker are the places for deeper questions.

Questions about Athena.

4 questions

How do I install Athena?

Install Fabric or NeoForge for your chosen Java release, then put Athena's file in the mods folder of your instance. Add any dependency listed for your loader, which on Fabric is Fabric API. Launch with the loader's profile and the mod loads on the player's side.

Does Athena work on multiplayer servers?

No. Athena is required on the player's side and is not supported on dedicated multiplayer hosts. Install it only on the machine you play on, and keep it out of the host's mods folder.

Does Athena work with Forge?

Only older releases do. Forge files cover Java 1.19.4 to 1.20.4 and stopped in March 2024, while Fabric and NeoForge kept receiving updates. Players on newer releases should use Fabric or NeoForge.

Who develops Athena and where is its source code?

Athena is made by Terrarium, a Modrinth organisation, with ThatGravyBoat as lead developer. The source code lives at terrarium-earth/Athena on GitHub under an MIT License, and the issue tracker there handles bug reports. A wiki is hosted at wiki.terrarium.earth/athena.
