Better Selection is a Fabric mod for Minecraft Java that makes text more pleasant to select by improving the "move by word" shortcut, Ctrl+← and Ctrl+→. It is client-side only and needs no other mods. MDLC01 publishes it on Modrinth.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.3 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What it changes
The mod has one job. It reworks word-by-word cursor movement so jumping and selecting across text is smoother. It also supports scripts that do not run left to right.
macOS shortcuts
macOS is supported, with the platform's own key conventions. Shortcuts that use Ctrl on Windows use Option instead. The mod also covers these Command shortcuts:
- Command+← moves the cursor to the beginning of the line.
- Command+→ moves the cursor to the end of the line.
- Command+Backspace deletes everything to the left of the cursor.
- Command+Delete deletes everything to the right of the cursor.
Installing it
Put the mod's .jar file in the mods folder inside your .minecraft directory, then launch with the Fabric profile. If Fabric is not set up yet, installing Fabric covers the loader first. Install it only on the player's own machine, since dedicated hosts are unsupported.
Questions about Better Selection.
3 questions
Does Better Selection work on macOS?
Yes, macOS is supported. Shortcuts that use Ctrl on Windows use Option on a Mac. Command+← and Command+→ move the cursor to the start and end of the line, while Command+Backspace and Command+Delete remove everything to the left or right of the cursor.
Does Better Selection support right-to-left scripts?
Yes. The creator confirms that the mod supports scripts that do not run left to right, so the improved move-by-word behaviour is not limited to left-to-right text. The feature itself is still the same Ctrl with arrow key shortcut.
Does Better Selection fix MC-121278?
No. Better Selection only improves the move-by-word shortcut. The same creator, MDLC01, made a separate mod called Universal Shortcuts that does address MC-121278, so look there if that bug is what you are after.
