Client Sort is an inventory sorting mod that adds sort, fill stacks, restock and transfer operations to your own inventory and to any container you open. It runs on Fabric, NeoForge and Forge, and Quilt builds have stopped. The mod is required on the client, while a dedicated server may install it as an option.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cloth Config API and Mod Menu; some builds for 26.1 to 26.2 require Mod Menu; some builds for 1.20 to 1.21.7 require Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cloth Config API; some builds for 26.1 need no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.20.1. The newest build requires Cloth Config API.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 1.21.1, builds stopped after September 2024. The newest build requires Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu.
What the operations do
- Sort. Press the button or the keybind (middle mouse button by default). Items follow creative inventory search tab order. Shift sorts by descending quantity, Control alphabetically, Alt by ascending item ID.
- Fill Stacks. Tops up partial stacks in the other inventory from the one you act on. Hidden on the player inventory unless enabled in the editor.
- Restock. Refills the other inventory from the origin inventory without adding new item types.
- Transfer. Moves as many items as possible from the origin inventory to the other.
Configuration and the editor
Right-click a trigger button to open the editor, or bind the Open Editor key and press it while viewing an inventory. There you can ignore individual slots and run an operation automatically when an inventory opens. The mod config adds sorting overrides that pin items to the start or end, and matching overrides that ignore NBT data such as enchantments.
Multiplayer and servers
With the mod on a dedicated server, some operations run server-accelerated. Server policies in clientsort-server.json can switch these off when the mod detects a wrong state, such as item duplication, and reload with /clientsort reload. The config's own example entry blocks sorting in the toolbox menu from Create.
To install, place the mod file and its required libraries in the mods folder for your loader. The Java mod installation guide covers the steps.
Questions about Client Sort.
3 questions
How do I sort a chest with Client Sort?
Open the chest and press the sort button, or hover over the inventory and press the keybind, which is the middle mouse button by default. Items follow the creative inventory search tab order. Hold Shift, Control or Alt while sorting for quantity, alphabetical or item ID order.
Does Client Sort need to be installed on the server?
No. The mod is required on the client, and a dedicated server may install it as an option. With it installed there, server policies can disable server-accelerated operations when the mod detects a wrong state, such as item duplication.
Can Client Sort ignore certain slots?
Yes. The editor screen lets you exclude slots from being processed by any operation. Open it by right-clicking a trigger button, or bind the Open Editor key and press it while viewing an inventory. The editor also controls automatic operations on opening.
