Inventory Sorting is an inventory sorting mod for Fabric and NeoForge that tidies the player inventory and any container with a single action. It is built to run on the server side, and it also works in single-player because Minecraft runs an integrated server behind the scenes. Kyrptonaught's mod is maintained with meza and supports every inventory, including ones added by other mods.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.19 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cloth Config API and Fabric API, optionally Mod Menu; some builds for 1.19 to 1.21.4 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.3 require Fabric API.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cloth Config API.
Ways to trigger a sort
- Click the sort button (needs the client mod).
- Press the keybind (needs the client mod).
- Double-click an empty slot (works with an unmodded client).
- Run /invsort sort or /invsort sortme in chat (works with an unmodded client).
That split is the main appeal. Modpack makers and multiplayer hosts can add sorting without asking every player to install anything, since double-click and commands need nothing on the client.
Server and client setup
The mod is required on the server. The client side is optional and adds the visual buttons, the keybind and in-game configuration menus. Those client features need Cloth Config API, and Mod Menu is an optional shortcut to the settings screen. If you have not installed a loader yet, the Fabric guide covers it. Put the mod file and its dependencies in the mods folder.
Configuration and trade-offs
You can choose where sorting is enabled, change how it behaves, and hide the interface elements for specific containers. Some modded inventories clash with the default behaviour, and the built-in configuration is how those get resolved. Every option is documented on the project wiki at inventorysorter.meza.gg.
Questions about Inventory Sorting.
4 questions
Does Inventory Sorting work without a client mod?
Yes. The mod runs on the server, so double-clicking an empty slot and the /invsort sort and /invsort sortme commands work with a vanilla client. The sort button, keybind and in-game configuration menus need the optional client mod installed as well.
How do I sort my inventory with a command?
Type /invsort sort or /invsort sortme in chat. Both commands work for players who have no client mod, as long as the mod is installed on the server.
Does Inventory Sorting work with modded inventories?
It supports all inventories, including those added by other mods. If a particular modded container behaves badly, the built-in configuration lets you control where sorting is enabled or hide the interface elements for that container.
Does Inventory Sorting work in single-player?
Yes. Single-player worlds run an integrated server behind the scenes, so the server-side mod works there without any extra setup. The sort button and keybind still require the client mod, and the config menus rely on Cloth Config API.
