Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge that lets you silence or turn down individual sounds instead of cutting a whole volume category. It is a Java Edition mod only. Adding it to a dedicated multiplayer host does nothing, so it is a personal setting, not a shared one.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.18 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.18 to 1.21.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.
Muting a sound
- 1.Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen.
- 2.Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.
- 3.Optional: drag the slider to set a volume instead of full silence.
- 4.Optional: press the play button to confirm it is the right sound.
Anchors for local quiet
Anchors are ranged mufflers, meant for muting a sound only in a small area. There are 10 numbered Anchors in the muffler screen. Select one, press the marker button to set its position, then muffle the sounds you want. You can move an Anchor at any time with the same marker button, and the edit button sets its name and range. That makes it a fit for a noisy machine room or farm that you want quiet while the rest of the world stays audible.
Configuration and trade-offs
Most behaviour is configurable. You can place the muffle and play buttons on either side of the screen, set the default muffle volume, disable Anchors, and blacklist sounds so they never appear in the list. A dark mode is also available in the config. The inventory button can be turned off, or dragged elsewhere by holding right mouse button over it. For loader setup, see the guides on installing mods on Java Edition.
Questions about Extreme Sound Muffler.
3 questions
Does Extreme Sound Muffler work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, as a client-side mod it can be used while playing on a multiplayer host. Installing it on the host itself does nothing. It only changes what you hear on your own machine, so other players are not affected by your muted sounds.
How do I open the Extreme Sound Muffler screen?
Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen. From there you pick a sound, click the button beside it to muffle it, and optionally drag the slider to set a volume instead of full silence. The play button lets you confirm it is the right sound first.
What are Anchors in Extreme Sound Muffler?
Anchors are ranged mufflers for quieting a sound only in a small area. You get 10 numbered slots. Select one, press the marker button to set its position, and optionally name it and set its range. You can move an Anchor whenever you want.
