FastFurnace

A Shadows_of_Fire mod that lowers the tick cost of furnaces, blast furnaces and smokers. It leaves smelting speed untouched.

The FastFurnace mod is a performance mod for the furnace, blast furnace and smoker, made by Shadows_of_Fire. It runs on NeoForge, and its older Forge support has stopped. It lowers the tick cost of smelting and does not change how fast anything cooks. Files are tagged for both client and server.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Placebo.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after March 2024. The newest build requires Placebo.

What it changes

FastFurnace uses mixins to edit how the three vanilla furnace types look up recipes. Vanilla scans the whole furnace recipe registry on every tick. This mod caches the last recipe used and checks it first, so the full scan only happens when that recipe no longer fits.

Any mod whose furnaces build on AbstractFurnaceTileEntity gets the same benefit without extra setup. That matters most in large modpacks, where the recipe registry grows fast.

How much it helps

The author's own test ran 9 furnaces smelting cobblestone nonstop, comparing vanilla against FastFurnace with a similar number of invocations. Vanilla has roughly 70 furnace recipes. A modpack can reach 700, and the author expects the gain to grow with that count.

Installation

  1. 1.Install NeoForge for your Minecraft release, following how to install Forge and NeoForge.
  2. 2.Place the FastFurnace file and its required library file in the mods folder inside the game directory (.minecraft/mods by default).
  3. 3.Launch with the NeoForge profile. On a dedicated host, add the same files to the host's mods folder.
  4. 4.For a general walkthrough, see installing Java mods.

Forge users on older releases are limited to builds that stopped in 2024.

Questions about FastFurnace.

3 questions

Does FastFurnace make furnaces smelt faster?

No. FastFurnace improves TPS performance, not smelting speed. It caches the last recipe each furnace used and checks it before scanning the full recipe registry. Items cook at the normal vanilla rate, but the game spends less time on furnace lookups each tick.

Do I need FastFurnace on the server or the client?

The files are tagged for both client and server. The mod edits furnace recipe lookups with mixins, caching the last recipe used and checking it before scanning the full registry. The saving comes from skipping that full scan, which gets costly as modpacks add more furnace recipes.

Does FastFurnace work with modded furnaces?

Yes, when the modded furnace builds on AbstractFurnaceTileEntity. Those furnaces receive the same recipe caching as the vanilla furnace, blast furnace and smoker. The gain grows in modpacks, where the number of furnace recipes can be many times higher than in vanilla.
