GeckoLib

GeckoLib is the shared animation library many Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge mods depend on for custom mob, item, and block animation. It adds nothing to play with on its own, but the mods that need it will not load without it.

Nobody installs GeckoLib because they want it. A mob mod, a gun mod, or a custom entity add-on refused to load, the crash log named a missing GeckoLib dependency, and that is how most players land here. GeckoLib is a shared animation library for Minecraft Java. It ships builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt, and it gives other mods the bone rigging, keyframe animation, and item posing tools they build custom content on top of.

What the GeckoLib mod actually does

GeckoLib is a library, not a gameplay mod. Adding it to a mods folder by itself changes nothing in a world. What it changes is whether the mods built on top of it will load at all. GeckoLib handles the animation math, bone rigs, keyframes, and Molang expressions, that let creators give custom mobs, guns, armor, and blocks smooth, game-ready motion without writing an animation engine from scratch for every project. That is why it sits in the game mechanics, library, and utility categories rather than under any single gameplay genre.

GeckoLib for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge

GeckoLib publishes separate builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt, and each build only loads on its matching loader. The Fabric jar will not load on a Forge instance, and the reverse throws the same mod-loading crash that likely sent you looking for this page. Match GeckoLib's loader and Minecraft version to what the dependent mod's own page lists before downloading anything.

  • Fabric, the loader most GeckoLib-dependent mob and gun mods target first
  • Forge, with long-running support tracked separately from the Fabric builds
  • NeoForge, the modern Forge fork and the primary Forge-family target for 26.x releases
  • Quilt, a Fabric-compatible loader that uses the GeckoLib Fabric build family

Picking the right GeckoLib version

GeckoLib has shipped builds back to Minecraft 1.12.2, and the project keeps adding new ones as Minecraft moves through its year.drop release cycle. The current build lines up with the 26.2 drop (last updated July 1, 2026), with recent releases also covering 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.1, and 26.1.2. Older Minecraft versions, including 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20.1, and 1.21.1, still have matching GeckoLib releases for players on mods that have not updated yet. Match GeckoLib's version number to the exact Minecraft build the dependent mod lists. Installing the newest GeckoLib release does not help if the mod that needs it has not caught up.

  • 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20.1, and 1.21.1, for older or slower-updating dependent mods
  • 1.21.5 and 1.21.8, mid-cycle releases still in wide use
  • 1.21.10 and 1.21.11, the last releases before Minecraft's year.drop switch
  • 26.1 and 26.2, the current year.drop line, with 26.2 the latest build as of July 2026

Mods that need GeckoLib

GeckoLib backs a range of Fabric and Forge content mods that add custom mobs, weapons, or armor with original animation work. Creeper Overhaul, for one, lists GeckoLib as a required dependency for its animated creeper variants and will not load without it. If a mod's own page names GeckoLib as a dependency, treat this page as the version and loader reference, and grab the exact build that mod calls for, not just the newest GeckoLib release.

Installing GeckoLib

  1. 1.Install the matching mod loader, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt, for the Minecraft version the dependent mod needs.
  2. 2.Download the GeckoLib build for that loader and version from the Modrinth project page.
  3. 3.Drop the GeckoLib jar into the same mods folder as the mod that requires it.
  4. 4.Launch the game, or the server, with the matching loader profile selected.

Questions about GeckoLib.

5 questions

How do I install GeckoLib?

Install the mod loader, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt, that the mod you actually want calls for, then drop the matching GeckoLib jar into your mods folder alongside it. GeckoLib does nothing by itself, so install order does not matter as long as both files use the same loader and Minecraft version.

Does GeckoLib work with Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge?

Yes. GeckoLib publishes separate builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt. Each build only loads on its matching loader, so check which loader and Minecraft version the mod you need GeckoLib for actually uses before downloading.

Which Minecraft version does GeckoLib support?

GeckoLib has builds going back to Minecraft 1.12.2, and the current release lines up with the 26.2 drop. Recent versions also cover 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.1, and 26.1.2. Match the GeckoLib version number to the exact Minecraft build the dependent mod lists, not the newest release available.

What mods need GeckoLib?

Creeper Overhaul lists GeckoLib as a required dependency for its animated creeper variants. Other Fabric and Forge mods that add custom mobs, guns, or armor with original animation work often depend on it too. Check the dependency list on the mod's own Modrinth or CurseForge page to confirm before installing.

Do I need GeckoLib on a multiplayer server?

GeckoLib is required on the client. Adding it to the server is optional unless a dependent mod's own instructions specifically call for a server-side copy. Leaving it off a server that needs it will fail joins with a missing-mod error.
