Highlight is a client-side mod that replaces the rigid, axis-aligned selection box on certain vanilla blocks with angled outlines that follow the block's model. It runs on Fabric and NeoForge, with an older Forge line that is no longer updated. Nothing is added to the world. Only the outline you see when aiming at a block changes.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.20.5 to 1.21.10 require Fabric API.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after July 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What Highlight changes

Vanilla draws selection outlines as boxes aligned to the axes. On blocks whose models are not boxy, that outline never quite matches what you are looking at. Highlight swaps those boxes for more defined shapes with angles, so the outline traces the model itself.

The effect is purely visual. It suits players who want a cleaner look while building or decorating, and it does not touch recipes, items or mechanics. The trade-off is scope: only specific blocks get the new outlines, so do not expect every block in a heavily modded pack to change.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Fabric or NeoForge for the Minecraft release you play. The guides for Fabric and Forge and NeoForge cover the loader step.
  2. 2.If your Fabric build lists Fabric API as required, add it first. The newest build needs nothing extra.
  3. 3.Drop the Highlight file into the mods folder of your game directory, as described in the mod installation guide.
  4. 4.Launch with the loader's profile and aim at a supported block to see the new outline.

Adding shapes for more blocks

Team Resourceful accepts contributions through a Blockbench plugin that generates the JSON files the mod needs for each outline. Documentation sits on the Resourceful library wiki, and issues are tracked on the GitHub repository. Forge users should note that those builds stopped in 2023, so Fabric or NeoForge is the route for current releases.

Questions about Highlight.

4 questions

How do I install the Highlight mod?

Install Fabric or NeoForge for your Minecraft release, then place the Highlight file in the mods folder of your game directory and start the game with that loader's profile. Some Fabric builds also need Fabric API, while the newest build lists no dependencies.

Does Highlight work on multiplayer servers?

Highlight is client-side and does not support servers. You install it only on your own machine, and it changes how block outlines look for you. Do not put it in a server's mods folder, because the server side is unsupported.

Does Highlight still support Forge?

Forge builds of Highlight stopped in July 2023, while Fabric and NeoForge kept receiving updates. For a current Minecraft release, use the Fabric or NeoForge file instead of waiting for a Forge update.

What does the Highlight mod actually change?

It changes the selection outline on specific vanilla blocks. Instead of a rigid box aligned to the axes, the outline gets angled, more defined shapes that match the block's model. It is cosmetic, so gameplay, recipes and items stay the same.
