Iron Chests is a Forge and NeoForge mod for Minecraft Java Edition that replaces the jump from one chest to a double chest with seven upgradeable tiers, copper up to obsidian, plus a disguised dirt chest for hidden storage. NeoForge builds reach the current 1.21.11 release; Forge support stopped at 1.20.2. It runs on both the client and the server, with no other mods required.

What each chest tier holds

  • Copper chest: 45 slots, the smallest step up from a single vanilla chest.
  • Iron chest: 54 slots, the same capacity as a vanilla double chest.
  • Gold chest: 81 slots.
  • Diamond chest: 108 slots.
  • Crystal chest: 108 slots, with a transparent model that shows the stored items without opening it.
  • Obsidian chest: 108 slots, the top tier, matching diamond and crystal for capacity.
  • Dirt chest: 1 slot, disguised to look like a plain block for hidden or decorative storage.

Every tier upgrades in place. Right-click an existing chest with the matching upgrade item, wood or copper into iron, iron into gold, gold into diamond, and diamond into crystal or obsidian, and the mod keeps everything already stored inside instead of forcing an empty inventory first. Trapped variants of every tier exist too, sending a redstone signal while open, and they upgrade the same way.

Installing Iron Chests on Forge or NeoForge

Iron Chests ships as two separate build lines rather than one jar that covers both loaders. Download the file matching your loader and Minecraft version from the source link, drop it into the mods folder, and install the same version on both the client and the server for multiplayer, since Iron Chests is required on both sides. The latest build declares no dependencies for either loader, so no library mod is needed alongside it.

Compatibility with other storage mods

Iron Chests declares no dependencies and does not share blocks or items with other storage mods, so it runs fine alongside heavier storage systems. It does not integrate with either one directly: Sophisticated Storage adds searchable, upgradeable storage with more automation, and Storage Drawers focuses on bulk, sorted item storage for large builds. Iron Chests fits smaller setups where a quick tier upgrade beats building out a full storage system. Shulker box variants that shipped in the mod before Minecraft 1.13 were split into a separate Iron Shulker Boxes mod, so Iron Chests itself only covers the metal chest tiers and the dirt chest listed above.

Questions about Iron Chests.

5 questions

What do the different chest tiers do in Iron Chests?

Each tier adds more inventory slots than the last. Copper holds 45 slots, iron matches a vanilla double chest at 54, gold reaches 81, and diamond, crystal, and obsidian all hold 108. The crystal chest is see-through, and the dirt chest holds only 1 slot but disguises itself as a plain block.

How do I upgrade a chest to a higher tier?

Right-click the chest with the matching upgrade item, crafted from the target metal and named for its source and target tier, such as iron to gold. The chest keeps everything already stored inside instead of forcing an empty inventory first. Upgrades chain: wood or copper to iron, iron to gold, gold to diamond, and diamond to crystal or obsidian.

Does Iron Chests work with Sophisticated Storage or Storage Drawers?

Yes. Iron Chests has no dependencies and does not share blocks or items with either mod, so all three run together without conflict. Sophisticated Storage adds searchable, upgradeable storage, Storage Drawers handles bulk sorted storage, and Iron Chests stays the simplest option for a quick chest upgrade.

Does Iron Chests work with Forge?

Only up to Minecraft 1.20.2. Every release since then, including the current 1.21.11 build, ships for NeoForge only. Players on Forge past 1.20.2 need a different mod or a switch to NeoForge to keep using it.

Does Iron Chests include shulker boxes?

No. Shulker box variants shipped in the mod before Minecraft 1.13, but they were split into a separate mod called Iron Shulker Boxes. Iron Chests itself now covers only the metal chest tiers and the disguised dirt chest.
