Legendary Tooltips is a Minecraft Java mod for Forge and NeoForge that swaps plain item tooltips for embellished frames on the items you pick. It runs entirely on the client, so it changes what you see in your own inventory and nothing on a multiplayer host. Think of it as a legendary tooltips mod for players who want rare gear to look rare.

Loaders and versions

  • Forge: Minecraft 1.12.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires [Iceberg [Neo/Forge]](/mods/iceberg) and Prism [Neo/Forge]; some builds for 1.12.2 to 1.21.4 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.17.1 to 1.18.1 require [Iceberg [Neo/Forge]](/mods/iceberg).
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build requires [Iceberg [Neo/Forge]](/mods/iceberg) and Prism [Neo/Forge]; some builds for 1.21.4 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.1 need no dependencies.

What it changes

The headline feature is the custom border. Pick a set of items and they get a decorative frame. Around that, the mod adds a set of general tooltip options:

  • Centered item names and a separator line under them
  • Tooltip shadows and borders that match the item's colour
  • 3D item previews in the tooltip
  • Compact tooltips
  • Fancier comparison tooltips when Equipment Compare is installed

The mod adds to tooltip behaviour rather than rewriting it, which is why the creator describes it as highly compatible.

Configuration and custom borders

Setup happens in the config file. Up to sixteen custom borders are supported, and each can apply to items by name, mod, tag, vanilla rarity, item name colour, display name, tooltip text or NBT tag. One default border ships with the mod. More come from resource packs, and Eclectic Trove is the creator's example pack with ten extra frames.

Resource pack authors can also define borders through a .json file that loads alongside every other active definition instead of replacing it. Mod authors can add Legendary Tooltips as a dependency and register frames in code.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Forge or NeoForge for the Minecraft release you play, following the Forge and NeoForge install guide.
  2. 2.Download the Legendary Tooltips file that matches your loader and release from CurseForge.
  3. 3.Download the libraries your build needs, starting with Iceberg, and put them in the same mods folder.
  4. 4.Launch with the loader profile, then adjust the config file or add a border resource pack.

General steps for any mod are in the Java mod install guide. Nothing needs installing on a multiplayer host.

Questions about Legendary Tooltips.

4 questions

Is Legendary Tooltips client-side only?

Yes. The creator describes the mod as fully client-side, and the files are tagged for the client. You install it in your own mods folder and tooltips change on your screen only. A multiplayer host does not need it, and other players do not see your borders.

Does Legendary Tooltips work on Fabric?

This page covers the Forge and NeoForge edition only. The mod is described as the Forge edition, and Fabric players are pointed to a separate Fabric edition. A Fabric profile needs that edition, because the Forge and NeoForge builds will not load on Fabric.

How do I add custom tooltip borders?

The mod ships with one default border and holds up to sixteen. A resource pack can replace the default or add definitions through a .json file, and mods can register frames too. The Eclectic Trove pack adds ten frames and is the creator's suggested starting point. The config then assigns each frame to items.

Does Legendary Tooltips need other mods?

Yes, the newest builds need Iceberg and Prism. Equipment Compare is optional and adds fancier comparison tooltips when present. Some older builds need fewer libraries, so check the file listing for the release you pick.
