Backpacks! is a backpacks datapack from Eclipse Studios that adds vanilla-friendly backpacks you can dye, upgrade and style. It ships as files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a plain datapack with no loader at all. It runs on both sides, but the multiplayer host must have it. Joining players do not.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.20.5 to 26.2. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.1 need no dependencies.
Two ways to install
Pick the route that matches how you play. The loader files suit modded setups.
- 1.Datapack route: take the plain datapack file from the Modrinth page. The newest datapack build lists no required dependencies.
- 2.Mod route: take the file made for your loader and place it, plus any required library, in the mods folder inside your .minecraft directory. Then launch with that loader's profile.
- 3.New to loaders? The guide to installing Forge and NeoForge covers the setup.
What the backpacks do
- Backpacks that you can dye and style.
- Backpacks you can upgrade, while keeping the look and feel close to vanilla.
- Custom backpack models drawn by Mitsaori.
- A shader from Evtema3 that hides the menu nametag in third person, using AmberWat's Negative Space Font.
- Translations in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Russian and European Portuguese.

Questions about Backpacks!.
3 questions
Do I need a mod loader to use Backpacks!?
No. Backpacks! ships as a plain datapack as well as files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, so a loader is only one of the two install routes. The newest builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt require Fabric API, while the newest datapack build lists no requirements.
Do players joining a multiplayer world need Backpacks! installed?
No. Installation is required on the host side and optional for joining players. A world whose host lacks it will not have the backpacks, so install it where the world actually runs. Expect possible item flicker inside backpacks, which comes from the Sentinel library.
Does Backpacks! work on Bedrock?
No. It is a Java project. Datapacks and the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt files all target Java, and Bedrock uses a different add-on format that cannot load them.
