Fishing Expansion is a fishing expansion datapack that also ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It rebuilds fishing as an ocean progression path with new enchantments, structure maps, a boss and real mobs on the hook. It must run on the server and is optional on the client.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What changes when you fish

Every custom enchantment is fished. None appear in loot tables or from trading.

  • Water Trail leaves a water path on the arrow and does not combine with Flame.
  • Ender Hook teleports you to where the rod lands.
  • Hooked Strike lets rods deal damage.
  • Dolphin's Grace grants the effect of the same name.
  • Sea Lure is Lure up to level V, and Treasure Hunter is Luck of the Sea up to level V. Each excludes its original counterpart.

The catch table grows well beyond items. You can reel in maps to ocean monuments, ruined portals, shipwrecks, underwater ruins and a new boat structure. Special fish give potion effects such as resistance or haste, and Barrel Ships bring up shipwreck cargo. Any marine mob can bite, from drowned and guardians to squids and turtles, and hooked mobs are pulled toward you. The end-game prize is Turtle Armor, an extremely rare catch that grants Conduit Power while swimming and Resistance I.

Summoning the Elder Drowned

  1. 1.Fish up the Heart of the Elder Drowned, an extremely rare treasure catch.
  2. 2.Build an altar of Prismarine Bricks with water in the centre.
  3. 3.Throw the Heart into the water.
  4. 4.Fight the boss when it rises.

Winning pays out a large amount of experience and a trident enchantment that no other source offers.

Installing the mod or the datapack

Fishing Expansion needs no other mods. If you have not set up a loader yet, the guide to installing Java mods covers it.

Questions about Fishing Expansion.

4 questions

Is Fishing Expansion a datapack or a mod?

It is both. The same project ships as a plain datapack and as mod files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The newest release of each needs no other mods.

Does Fishing Expansion need to be installed on the server?

Yes. It is required on the server and optional on the client, so a multiplayer host has to add it. The newest release for each of Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt needs no other mods, so nothing else has to be installed alongside it.

How do I summon the Elder Drowned?

First fish up the Heart of the Elder Drowned, an extremely rare treasure catch. Then build an altar of Prismarine Bricks with water in the centre and throw the Heart into the water. The boss rises from the sea and drops a lot of experience and a trident enchantment found nowhere else.

Where do the new enchantments come from?

All of them come from fishing. They are not in loot tables and villagers do not trade them. That covers Water Trail, Ender Hook, Hooked Strike, Dolphin's Grace, Sea Lure and Treasure Hunter, so you have to cast a rod to collect them.
