Magnum Torch is a Java mod for Fabric and NeoForge that stops natural mob spawns across a huge area around your base. It is required on both client and server, so multiplayer worlds need it on each side. Only natural spawns are blocked, which means spawners and raids still work as they should.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API, Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build requires Puzzles Lib.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 1.20.4, builds stopped after January 2024. The newest build requires Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port, optionally Forge Config Screens; builds for 1.18.2 to 1.20.1 require Puzzles Lib.
What each torch blocks
The torch you craft decides which mobs stay away. Mobs already in the world do not vanish when you place one, only new spawns are prevented.
- Diamond: all monsters, including zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders and phantoms.
- Emerald: passive mobs such as wandering traders and trader llamas. Animals are technically affected, but they only appear during world generation or breeding, and neither is touched.
- Amethyst: cave and water mobs, including bats, all squids, axolotls and all fish.
Configuration
Every torch is fully adjustable. You can change the effective range, the shape of the protected zone (cuboid, cylinder or ellipsoid), a whitelist or blacklist of individual mobs, and the type of mob blocked (monster, water, cave or passive). One torch could cover only phantoms, another only wandering traders, a third every kind of fish.
On Fabric there is no in-world config screen yet. Run /config showfile with the modid, pick CLIENT or SERVER, then click the .toml file name that appears in chat to edit it. The config reloads a couple of seconds after you save, with no restart.
Installation
Drop the mod file and each required library from the list above into the mods folder of a matching loader profile. Puzzles Lib is needed on every loader. If you are new to this, the guide to installing Java mods covers the folder and profile steps.
The idea comes from the magnum torch block in RWTema's old Extra Utilities mod. Nyffuuuh23 made the textures.
Questions about Magnum Torch.
5 questions
Does Magnum Torch stop spawner and raid mobs?
No. Magnum Torch only prevents natural spawns. Mob spawners and raids keep working as they normally do, so a dungeon spawner next to your base will still produce mobs even inside the protected area.
Does a magnum torch remove mobs that are already nearby?
No. Placing a torch only stops new mobs from spawning. Anything already in the world stays where it is until you deal with it, so clear the area first if you want it empty right away.
How do I edit the Magnum Torch config on Fabric?
Join a world and run /config showfile with the modid, choosing CLIENT or SERVER. Click the .toml file name shown in chat to open it in an editor. After you save, the config reloads automatically within a few seconds, with no restart needed.
Does Magnum Torch need to be installed on the server?
Yes. The mod is required on both client and server. Players who join a multiplayer world need it installed, and the host needs it too, along with the required library mods for their loader.
Is Magnum Torch the same as the Extra Utilities magnum torch?
No. Magnum Torch is a standalone mod by Fuzs. It was inspired by the magnum torch block in RWTema's old Extra Utilities mod, but it adds its own diamond, emerald and amethyst torches with configurable range and shape.
