Visual Workbench is a Minecraft Java mod that keeps crafting table ingredients inside the grid and renders them, plus the result, on top of the block. It runs on Fabric and NeoForge up to 26.3, and it has to be installed on both the client and the server. Break the table and every item drops on the ground.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: 1.19 to 26.3.
  • NeoForge: 1.20.4 to 26.3.
  • Forge: stopped. Builds end at 1.20.4, and there is nothing newer for Forge.
  • Side: required on client and required on server.

The 26.3 branch is the primary one, and 26.1 and 1.21.1 are still maintained. The 1.20.1 branch gets bugfixes only, and most other branches are archived.

Configuration and credits

Settings live in the config folder as toml files named with the mod ID, with separate client, common and server variants where they exist. On Fabric, in-game editing needs Mod Menu (by Prospector) installed.

The rendering code comes largely from Prototik's RealBench mod, and Prototik also supplied the original idea. The Just Enough Items plugin code is from Tfarecnim's Crafting Station mod. Daomephsta pointed the author toward supporting modded crafting tables on Fabric.

Questions about Visual Workbench.

4 questions

Does Visual Workbench work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, but it must be installed on both the client and the server. Neither side works alone. On Fabric the server also needs Fabric API, Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port alongside the mod, while NeoForge needs Puzzles Lib only. Config files can be split into client, common and server variants.

Which Minecraft versions does Visual Workbench support?

Fabric builds cover 1.19 to 26.3, and NeoForge builds cover 1.20.4 to 26.3. Forge builds exist for 1.19 to 1.20.4 but have stopped, so anyone on a current version should use Fabric or NeoForge instead.

What do I need to install with Visual Workbench?

On Fabric you need Fabric API, Puzzles Lib and Forge Config API Port. On NeoForge you only need Puzzles Lib. Forge Config Screens is optional on 1.20.4 to 1.21.7 builds. Nothing else is listed as required. On Fabric, editing settings in game also needs Mod Menu installed.

What happens to the items if I break the crafting table?

Everything stored in the grid drops on the ground, as with a normal container block. The ingredients and the result item are drawn on top of the table while it holds them, so nothing vanishes when you close the crafting screen.
