MmmMmmMmmMmm (Target Dummy)

Adds one item, a target dummy that shows the damage you deal in floating numbers and can wear armor. It also works as a scarecrow, a boss and a mob decoy.

MmmMmmMmmMmm, also called Target Dummy, is a target dummy mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge that adds exactly one item: a dummy you place in the world and hit. It wiggles, shouts damage numbers at you and wears armor. It runs on both client and server.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Moonlight Lib; some builds for 1.19.4 to 1.21.1 require Fabric API and Moonlight Lib; some builds for 1.17.1 to 1.19.2 need no dependencies.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Moonlight Lib.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.12 to 1.20.1. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.16.4 to 1.20.1 require Moonlight Lib.

What the dummy does

Every hit produces a large damage number, and several can show at once, fading so the newest stands out. Colors follow the damage type, so critical hits show red and lightning shows yellow. A dps readout appears on the status bar, either static or dynamic. Dress the dummy in armor and the numbers shrink. Equip an undead mob head and it takes that type, so you can test a smite sword without a skeleton nearby. Other headgear covers other mob categories.

Placing, dressing and automating

  • Right click a block to place it. It rotates in 16 directions, like an armor stand.
  • Right click it with armor, equipment or a shield to dress it. Click a body part to take a piece off.
  • Shift left click with an empty hand to remove it.
  • Dispensers can place it, and breaking the block under its feet removes it.
  • A Target Block below it turns the damage dealt into a redstone signal.
  • Rename the item to a number to set the dummy's health.
  • Give it a banner for Boss Mode, with an optional boss bar.
  • A pumpkin or jack o lantern turns it into a scarecrow that scares nearby animals. A player head makes mobs target it instead.

Config and trade-offs

The config file changes the swing, the skin, static or dynamic dps messages, and can show hearts instead of damage. It can also turn on damage numbers for any entity, not only the dummy. The trade-off is scope, since the mod adds one item and nothing else. Newer files also rely on Moonlight Lib, so install it alongside the mod, following the mod install guide.

Questions about MmmMmmMmmMmm (Target Dummy).

4 questions

How do I dress the target dummy in armor?

Right click the dummy while holding the armor, equipment or shield you want it to wear. To take a piece off, click the matching body part. Armor makes the displayed damage numbers smaller. Shift left clicking with an empty hand removes the whole dummy.

Can the target dummy work as a scarecrow?

Yes. Equip it with a pumpkin or a jack o lantern and it scares nearby animals. Equip a player head instead and mobs will target the dummy rather than you, which makes it useful as a decoy.

Can I read the damage a target dummy takes with redstone?

Yes. Place a Target Block below the dummy and its output signal reflects the damage dealt. Dispensers can also place the dummy, so you can automate a small damage testing setup without placing it by hand.

Does the target dummy mod work on multiplayer servers?

Files are tagged for both client and server, so the mod is built to run in multiplayer. Each file lists its own dependencies, and newer files rely on Moonlight Lib, so check what the file you pick requires before installing it and place any required library in the mods folder as well.
