NetherPortalFix is a server-side utility mod for Minecraft Java on Fabric, NeoForge and Forge. It makes Nether portals remember the Overworld portal a player used, so the trip back lands where the player started. It works in singleplayer too.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API and Balm; builds for 1.20.2 to 1.21.4 require Fabric API and Balm (Outdated Versions); builds for 1.17.1 to 1.20.1 require Balm (Outdated Versions).
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Balm; builds for 1.20.2 need no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 1.21.11. The newest build requires Balm.
What the mod fixes
The Nether and the Overworld use an 8:1 block ratio. On a busy multiplayer map, that means you can step into a portal, walk straight back through it, and come out of a different Overworld portal, sometimes inside another player's base. NetherPortalFix removes that surprise.
It tracks which portals each player went through and sends them back through the same ones. The 1:8 ratio is untouched. Portals simply remember where you came from.
- Players who return through the portal they arrived by end up where they came from.
Installing it
Put the mod file and its required library in the mods folder of the server, matching the loader and Minecraft release you run. Players do not need to add anything to their own installs. If you are new to loaders, the guides for installing Minecraft mods on Java and setting up Fabric cover the basics.
Trade-offs
The mod does one job and has no feature set beyond it. It needs a library mod on every loader, and the licence is All Rights Reserved, so modpack authors should check the permissions page before bundling it.
Questions about NetherPortalFix.
4 questions
Does NetherPortalFix change the Nether block ratio?
No. The 1:8 ratio between the Nether and the Overworld stays exactly as it is. The mod only records which portal a player used, so that going back through the same portal leads to the Overworld portal they started from.
Do players need NetherPortalFix installed too?
No. The mod only needs to be installed on the server. Players join as usual with no extra files, and the portal behaviour is handled entirely on the server side.
Does NetherPortalFix work in singleplayer?
Yes. It is meant for multiplayer servers, but it also works in singleplayer worlds. The same rule applies there, so a player who returns through the portal they entered by ends up where they came from.
Does NetherPortalFix work on Bedrock?
No. It is a Java Edition mod that runs on Fabric, NeoForge or Forge. Bedrock Edition cannot load mods built for those loaders.
